Modular Storage System

This is the first of 3 sections of a modular storage system for the Jeep. The skeleton is 1x1 16 gauge square tubing. It will be skinned on the sides with 1/4 inch ply wood with the lids and "tailgate" which need to support a load with 1/2 inch ply wood. One of the lids will be hinged to the front with the other to the rear and it will have a "tailgate" to facilitate loading/unloading when there is a load on-top of the box.

The reason for having the lid hinged is so you can access the box from inside the Jeep when the seats are folded down when using the Jeep as a big tent.

Future additions will include another cargo box for when the rear seat is folded down then the third one will be for when the passenger seat is removed to give me an extended sleeping area.

I suggest for more sleeping length, try a two door XJ front seat, they fold forward. I added one to my four door XJ, the space increase for sleeping was huge, plus with the folding seat it makes access to the rear from the front door much better. I got mine at a wrecking yard, direct bolt in fit, assuming compatible year models.

I'm currently running WJ seats. Would prefer to keep those. I'm actually short enough with the seat bottom removed to sleep comfortably in the back. The third piece wouldn't go all the way to the front to leave room for a cooler in the floor.

The Factory cargo tie-downs are not substantial and can pull out. In a rollover, anything that is not tied down can injure or kill you.
I added several threaded eyebolts to the rear cargo area, bolted through and backed up with fender washers and nylocs, and use ratchet straps to hold the spare tire and gear in the rear down.
This allows quick removal of the gear to access the 33 X10.50 spare tire.

factory tie downs are light duty at best. Kind of like them key chain carabiners, the ones that have "Not for climbing use" printed on them. gets some real tie down hooks for safety sake.

I’ve got several GM cargo tie-downs bolted to my cargo bed and back seat area. Very stout and they fold down somewhat flat when not in use. I grab them from Tahoes, a suburbans, and similar GM SUVs in JYs. These are what I’m talking about:

This is what I used in the back of my XJ. It is airplane seat track, better known as L-Track. Comes in all kinds of sizes, and different fittings.

We also use it to fly Speaker systems for PA's.
