Minimum cage for an XJ?

phil, i think you would be the happiest with a starter cage kit, like the EOR cage. if i were you, i would install the a and b pillar hoops, tie the floorplates to the rock rails, and tie in the entire inner a pillar to the front hoop, and tie in the b pillar on top. run 3 runner bars between the roof hoops, 1 along each out side edge and 1 in the middle, and install all the gussets. then if later on you want to chop the rear of the top or do something else, the rear hoop structure would not be in the way. hell, or you could even chop the rear hoop from the kit to fit behind/around the rear seat. the 2 hoop cage should weigh about 100lbs, would be non-intrusive, and it's a very add-onable structure that gives a lot of torsional strength to the chassis. something like this would protect you and keep the rig from falling apart, then if you roll it hard and scrap the sheetmetal, the cage might tweak some, but you still would have a solid starting point upon which to build whatever you want. i hope this helps.
