Midwest Fishing!

Thinking of getting a small boat. Problem is I'm not a small guy. I'm 5-11 and 260lbs. I want something light enough to load on top of the Jeep myself if I have too, but have enough flotation for 2 adults safely. Tried a friends 10 foot john boat and damn near flipped it getting in lol. I have a 14foot smokercraft deep-vee with bait well/ storage and swivel seats. Too heavy and impossible to get it to the lakes I want in one piece. Not only that a 25hp motor is a bit of overkill for many of those lakes. Love the boat but may trade it in on a pontoon in the near future.

Any ideas? How are those small boats you see at Dunhams or Fleet Farm? The plastic ones with the swivel seats and take a small trolling motor.

you get what you pay for when it comes to kayaks. FWIW, i was able to stand up and throw a cast net out of a kayak with a little practice.
 
those things arent any more stable than a quality kayak... your COG is so high that it makes you quite unstable. but i understand the need for two seats. a small trailer would make things easier to load. even with 2 kayaks on top of the jeep, i was a little worried.
 
Trying to get away from the trailer. The road is old logging roads and forest roads to these lakes and still need to walk in around 2 miles.

I see your point on COG. A boat like that I'd wear my life jacket instead of it sitting on the seat next to you.
 
just get a canoe...that would be my advice. i've seen plenty of canoes go for well under $600. ****s sporting goods used to have an old town for $400 new that was 14' long with a flat back. use the other $200 to buy a used trolling motor an battery. to this day i have yet to roll over a canoe (other than doing it on purpose when we were in high school). a 14' is fairly easy to take off the top of a truck/jeep and in my opinion they are more mobile and faster to get around in than one of those little fishing boats.

I think I need to plan a fishing trip to Lake City...
 
Going fishing Saturday evening on a friends private pond. Last time I was there, caught a little fish. Now that I got my pole, have to see if it is any good (only other time I used it, I caught nothing).
 
Hoping to get out to my uncle's this weekend and do some fishing. Hopefully this stupid drought hasn't killed all my fish! I do well every time I'm there.

Less water that was in there at the beginning of the year. I honestly don't know but I have a photo. Then ended up taking all the fish caught that day to a new pond. If Sarah likes fishing, I might talk to her about getting a pole and our licenses and maybe go a few more times this year (catch and release though).

Hell yeah! Crappie is awesome. Fun to catch, good to eat...

I agree. Between my dad and I we caught 140ish bluegill/redear in a day and a half back in May. Ranging from 11-13". That was a fun time.
