Midwest Fishing!

Has anyone seen the world record redear caught in california.......5.55lbs! My dad and I go to Dogwood lake in southern indiana and catch 13-14" redear but that thing was like 19 or something crazy.

Bluegill crappie and cats some large mouth if Im feeling froggy. I use crickets, beemoth and jigs for the crappie and bluegill. Liver for the cats. Let it sit out for a day or two in the sun and fester a bit. Been fishing cats for a few years and have never had very good luck with large ones. Usually about a pound or so. For bass, I set myself out to learn how to use rubber worms a few years ago and caught on very quickly. Im getting the hang of it and have very good luck with kicker weedless wacky worms. They work very well.

Had a buddy pull a redear out of Redbud lake down here that weight 15 oz. Biggest one I had ever seen.

I like to fish for trout in streams and creeks on a flyrod, wont find a folgers can in my gear unless it is sitting next to the coffee pot back at camp

A River Runs Through It. Good movie.

Me and the wife are gonna get our licenses and do some fishing this weekend. Get the ultralight with 5the lb and see what I can wrestle up.
come up to lake city during the summer. ill take ya bass fishing.

fly is something im going to be trying this year.

I used to bass fish and salt water fish, I tried Flyfishing and was hooked, ended up getting rid of all the other fishing gear and stuck to flyfishing only. I also learned to tie my own flies after buying them a couple times, whole lot cheaper to tie your own and really makes catching them all the more fun. I learned alot about it from Bob Johns who was also on the US flyfishing team at one time, that man could cast like you would not beleive. watched him shoot his line through a 4" hoop from 25 yards over and over without missing a single time.

well...got nothing but a sunburn today...buddy caught one big striped bass and a small crappie, but that was it. i forgot the whiskey, so the day was doomed from the get go. oh well...probably back at it thursday

its always a blast to watch people who are good.

i remember in Va, watching some of the guys who surf casted competatively... watching someone sling 8oz of lead 300 yards without blowing up the spool was intense. once i magged my avet, i could only really reach out to 100. but that was baited, and with a cheapish handmedown rod. i wish i had never gotten rid of that $250 gem of a real.

I go fishing twice a year with my dad, only because he like to fish, he is 70 and I enjoy spending time with him.
I myself have no patience for sitting in a leaky boat for hours on end.
I know some day he will be at the "great lake in the sky" and I will miss the hours we talked while sitting in that stupid "goes too slow" boat.

I once tried to put two 15 HP out boards on the back of it so it would go faster, I thought he was going to have a fit....
I also suggested we haul my big pontoon boat up there so we could fish, grill, drink, sleep, whatever; another "stupid idea...."

This sounds like typical "kid has idea, dad is too set in his ways to admit that it may be a good idea" stuff. I chuckled at the twin outboards idea. Especially when you said he may have a fit. The pontoon stuff sounds like a good time too. I wouldn't shoot it down.

As far as spending time with dad, I know exactly what you mean. I miss spending time with dad. Most times I go down to Indiana, I'm so busy seeing this person or the other person that I really don't get to spend a lot of time with dad. I really miss hunting and fishing with him.

Spring is springing and I'm getting the itch to get out and get into some panfish. We don't have a thread about fishing so I figured I would get one going.

I'm interested to know who else does some fishing besides Kim, Aaron and myself.
What do you like to fish for?
What do you use for bait?
What kind of accessories do you have?
What tips and tricks do you have?

All kinds of information about fishing of any kind at any time of year is encouraged! I want to get some good conversation going.

- Large Mouth, Bluegill, and RedEar. I haven't had any luck with Cat.
- Nightcrawlers, bee moth, plastics on a texas jig, spinners, rubber worms, crank baits.
- Ugly sticks; one with a spinning reel, baitcast reel, and a couple good ole Zebco 33 spincast reels.
- TIP: I tought my kids to bait, fish and bag or release the fish bythemselves by age 5, so I could get some fisihing in myself. If you take the kids fishing the wife doesn't mind if you are fishing all day long. Also, a slip bobber keep the kids from getting hung up on the bottom of the lake when they are reeling in there line. The hook pulls up to the bottom of the bobber with this setup (more time fishing, less time fixing the kids gear). :patriot:

whenever i have kids... even if its a daughter... they WILL know how to unhook their own fish. and respect for any game animal (fishing, hunting, etc... or animal in general) is key. my great grandma taught me, if your going to kill it, your going to eat it.

i enjoy catch and release. lol.

Love this - definitely not the act of fishing, but the time spent is what's most enjoyable!

On another note, I like fishing... especially if there's beer! I never really had anything fancy to fish with, so I used those neon pink and yellow furry bait hooks. Of course me saying I used the "furry bait" didn't get taken for face value. Woops!

You like anything with Beer involved!

Just bought a new ultra lite rod/reel combo from Bass Pro Shops for 19.99, Not bad for a 7'6" rod and a reel. I have the 6' version of the same rod and beat the crap out of it. Sale ends on the 15th.

Closest Bass Pro Shops to GB is in Chi-town. Sad.
