There should be a small tag on the diff cover that would have the ratio stamped on it, but what with the age of your XJ, it may be missing. The easiest way to tell is to jack up the front end, spin the drive shaft by hand and count the revolutions. If it takes 3 and a half revolutions of the driveshaft to spin the tires once, you have 3.55 gears. 3 times would be 3.07, 3 and 3/4 turns would be 3.73, 4 turns would be 4.10, etc. By the way, that MJ D44 will require new spring perches to fit in your XJ. The nice thing though is that the rest of the tubes will be clean for whatever custom shock mounts you require.

Remember you've got 2 diffs too. If there isn't a tag on one, look on the other. If all else fails, pull a cover and count teeth. You probably need to change the gear oil anyway.
