My family and I have been going up to the Eastern Sierras for over 15 years. We usually stay at Convict Lake camp ground and do much fishing and hiking. It has only been the last couple years that I have been exploring the number of different jeep trails in the area. They are not very difficult but very fun and beautiful. The difficulty is based off a 4x4 book I have.

Trail: Convict Lake Overlook
Difficulty: Easy
Location: Right before you turn off to the Convict Lake campground.

Did you fish Laurel lake? My buddy and I were lured up there by an article in the Herald Examiner (about 20 yrs ago) mentioning 14 inch goldens! We drove up there (from L.A.) in the middle of the night, threw our sleeping bags on the rocks and tried to sleep with a full moon overhead (it was like sleeping with the light on!) woke up, well......got up the next morning only to find absolutely NO fish in that lake! We think someone printed that article as a joke.....we felt like we were on a snipe hunt! We still laugh about that today! Anyway, beautiful pictures......you got my memory going! You ever get up to Baker and Thunder and Lightening lakes?........really pretty up there and miles and miles of scenic (easy) Jeep trails that skirt a whole bevy of Alpine lakes with a spectacular view of Mount Tom at trail's end. Man, I need to get up that way again! Thanks!-----------Hans

We fished it but did not catch anything. On the other hand we did see them swimming and one thrashed from a bear. The Golden Trout are there just hard to catch.

I have never been to thunder and lighting lake but I want to go and fish them. The trail is Coyote Flats out of Bishop.
