MA: Any legal restriction re EXTERNAL Gas Can?

Can anyone advise, definitively, whether or not there are any restrictions re the external mount/carry of gasoline cans in the People's Republic of MA...?

Thanks.

Well, it should be in a DOT approved can, securely attached to the rear or side of vehicle in such a manner as it won't leak. If mounted on the side of said vehicle, then it must not protrude past the mirror. The mirror is said to be the maximum width on a be vehicle... Those are the only things that I can offer.. As far as securely attached, it has to be more than a bungy cord or a ratchet strap.

I, recently, saw a post somewhere alluding to the fact that a state had moved to prohibit externally-mounted gasoline cans. Scanned it very briefly, ad didn't get any details. Thus, it seems wise to check and confirm that it isn't an issue here, where so much is.....

91XJMA, is your input KNOWLEDGE per the regs., or presumption...? Appreciated, either way.

Good news, though, for those with vehicles older then ten years: NO more emissions testing as part of the annual inspection. Vehicles ten years and newer will now be tested for emissions EVERY year..and, a few 'further safety checks' are added (I didn't get any detail on what those may be, or whether they will apply to all years, or just the 'last ten').

.... Because carrying 5 gallons of gasoline inside the passenger compartment is safer.

Sorry I have no helpful input on this but if it was me i'd choose personal safety over legality. Best way to find out is to stop into where the cops like to hang out (diner, DD's and such) and just ask them about it, try to find a state trooper.

Here in PA the statey's have barracks... with phones that take incoming calls. No need to run to the local Dunkin Donuts. :eyes:

I prefer face to face communication with officers to be on my terms, so when its on their terms they know I'm not a punk in a lifted Cherokee.:eyes:

I don't think that there are any restrictions. It's 100% legal to have a pickup bed full of gas cans.....so how could it be illegal to have one hanging off the back of your jeep??

I duno if there are any laws about color for gas carried in a non-commercial vehicle?? It's always a good idea to have it in a red can, so if you crash, responders automajically know what it is...which is always good. But my friend has a SWEET MB (which I helped him build, and it wins best of show every show he takes it to) and he's got two gas cans on it, which are OD green........but I highly doubt any cop that wasn't a straight up communist would ever pull over a stoner in an immaculate 44 MB because he had gas in OD steel jerry cans (not to mention the functioning (supposed to be not) 50 cal mounted in the back, the two M1s, the M14?? (some other rifle that was around in 44, looks to me like an M14ish type thing...not 100% sure that's what it is though) non-live grenades hanging off the back, etc, etc, etc). Yeah, he doesn't get pulled over at all.

If you've ever been to GAJR, the guy who wins the trophy for best military jeep every year....that 50 cal is not fake....it fires....I've fired it!! It makes the jeep move!!

Sorry for the hijack...you can't see the jerry cans, or the 50 cal (it's under the canvas in the back)...but this is the jeep I'm referring to.

In the last pic, he's showing me how he has the 50 cal in the back....and I'm the one like "WTF, why did you bring that thing to the jeep rally?!!"

and yes, we have wheeled it!! He doesn't like to do anything too nasty...obviously, but it's been on trails that you wouldn't bring a stock vehicle down.
