I was wondering if anybody knew a way to drop a XJ 2wd, other than cutting the coils or any other ghetto rigging??? Also has anybody heard of doing an airbag setup??

I figured if I posted this question here I would get a legitamate answer and not get the 3rd degree for doing it to a jeep, so please serious replies only.

Go to www.streetsourcemag.com. I think there is one or two there lowered. I think this would be badass but thats because I am also into lowered trucks. A lot of people on here are probably gonna complain about it. The best imo would be airbags. This also would not be extremely hard to do. Also I remember seeing some phantom grilles for cherokees but I think they were made by AIM (shaim!!!).

Options? Try these on, since no one really makes a bolt-on XJ kit then you'll be custom fabbing your drop.

Actually, the owner of Hotchkis Performance told us that he doesn’t consider air suspension a competitor to his business, because he’s all about performance and handing, while bags are for ride comfort and style. Here’s John’s take:

"The best thing that’s happened for airbags is AirRide Technologies because they’ve put some planning into the kits. Still, shock rates are an issue. The problem with a bag of air is that it’s really springy; it compresses to a certain point, then rebounds at the same rate. You need shocks with a ton of rebound damping. Ideally, you’d have a different damp rate for every combination of ride height, bag height, and bag pressure. That’s why the adjustable billet shocks are so popular. No one’s ever going to use airbags on a handling car, but for cruising, they’re great."

Seems like the bag/shock combo would allow you to fine tune the ride height of the front end, even if you need to fab a custom shock hoop to locate them but as with the quote above by Hotchkis, do you want ride or performance? Just with a lifted rig, there is a compromise......hey, why not some streetrod sized coilovers up front?
Since I'm getting more pressure about loading the kids into a 6" lifted XJ........I may score a 2nd rig to head in the other direction......

I beleive TJ front coils are 2" shorter than XJ fronts - I have a pair that I'm going to install on the MJ in place of the originals which have 1 coil cut off. I am expection another 1" drop but won't know till I do it.

Its just the wrong thing to do, not because its a Jeep, but because of that solid front axle. It doesnt handle all that well in a normal suspension mode let alone lowered. We live in a world of people trying to be something they're not, and some try to make things into something they're not. Go for something with IFS, that very well maybe a worth while project

You know, A late model Mustang IFS may not be too hard to adapt to the Chreokee. Just a thought though.

is it the wrong thing to do cause your lowering it or putting it on airbags, I dont think it would be bad to lower it, airbags on the other hand then yea go with the IFS

XJEEPER thanks for the help, but any idea on what fabrication I would need to do for these products. Just to let you know I do know my way around a car so any help would be great.

I remember seeing a 2" lowering kit in Specialist Leisure's catalogue - ask them what they can supply. Sourcing it in the US shouldn't be a problem.

Check this thread for some possible info. You can always ask the thread started what he's got planned. He plans on turning a Commanche into a street machine.
