A glimpse of the WWII era.

I like the Bugs Bunny cartoon where he's handing out popsicles booby trapped with hand grenades to the Jap soldiers. One of them comes back, all charred, his clothes shredded, because he got a 'free popsicle' stick in his first one.

That's a classic

wow, its 2006 and some of you still refer to Japanese people as "Japs".

too funny....ok, sad but funny.

are you angry at this?

In the spirit of the naivete' of the original.

Do you want to go back and change 'Jap' to 'Asian Individual of the Nipponese Islands?' After all, 'Japanese' isn't technically correct, anyway.

here is a good book if you really want to know how bad it was for POW's during WW2. I worked in a nursing home years ago and there were some veterans there who lived each day like they were still in the war. It was truly sad.

this book tells about the experiences that select POW's had during the war.

how ironic as all of the posters to support WW2 activities clearly never depicted what could actually happen at war. so many soldiers went in to serve their countries and probably never expected it to become something out of their nightmares.

You can choose anyway you would like to refer to people but in all truth it just makes you look like an uneducated redneck. Its not about changing words back to original scientific levels due to geographic locations but more about simple, common courtesy and respect for others.

People like yourself generally degrade others to make yourself feel superior and more educated than those around you.

Its a lifelong habit probably and I am not about changing people's traditions.

I am sure your daddy taught you this, and your daddy's daddy etc.....either way, traditions run deep.

Funny though how someone who was probably not in service during WW2 can open their mouths and act like the Japanese did something against them personally. I have met people who actually were there serving in the war who can still accept and respect Japanese culture.

Also, I see you are 46 years old, I am 33 and I can honestly say that you are no more educated than someone who is more than 10 years your minor.

Shame on you! That is some pretty redneck behavior you have exhibited today. you should take a day off NAXJA and take a cultural awareness class. I know that you represent the minority of the population but I just wanted to let you know that the term Jap is degrading.

Remember all of the soldiers who served for the ALL JAPANESE 442nd regimental combat team was one of the most decorated groups on the US side during WW2. Here is more info if you have read this far:

http://www.nikkeiheritage.org/research/442.html

Its amazing what a little education and history can do for a person though. It just astounds me that people still choose to use degrading names when refering to a people's race.

"Due to their outstanding bravery and the heavy combat duty they faced, the 100/442nd RCT became the most decorated unit in U.S. military history for its size and length of service. There were over 18,000 individual decorations for bravery, 9,500 Purple Hearts, and seven Presidential Distinguished Unit Citations."

Are you effing kidding? You don't know XJ Dreamin' at ALL if you are going off like that. Not even close man. Cripes you should be an olympic athlete the way you can jump to conclusions. His comment was off-colour, but I agree that it was said in the spirit of the original. I have several Japanese friends and none have ever been outraged at the use of that term. I wouldn't be pissed if someone called me a scotch bastard and that's a derogatory term against my ethnicity. I realize I come from a position of white privilege, but man, censorship is moronic compared to education...

Actually, the posters and the cartoon were created without the benefit of such images. You are mistaking an objective historical view that gives no weight to labels such as 'Jap' but does see some humor in the naivete' of the past for some non-PC attempt at maintaining a grudge against the Japanese people. There was no such attempt intended.

The significance of your reference to your eyes being too small eludes me.

I'm not racists against anyone or show any prejudice toward anyone, but since you're bringing up history and books. Did you happen to read "Flyboys" by James Bradley. Interesting book about the war in the Pacific against the Japanese. Very interesting about the torture and beheadings of the Americans. Let's not forget the canabalism the Japanese exhibited on the Americans after they were killed. Lovely huh. It's a good book.

WHAT THE FAWK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!?!?!?

a) He was using the term "Jap" in context; not specifically trying to offend anyone.

b) NObody involved in the second world war accorded themselves as badly as the Japanese, from long before the U.S. entered the war to the very last minute of it. YES, the picture you showed of the POW being beheaded DOES piss me off. HOW COULD YOU NOT be incensed???

c) Of course the people of Japanese ancestry contributed mightily to the war effort, and the various internment camps like Manzanar were atrocious. What's your point?

Thats true, there are people who would not be phased by the term "Jap" but were they also the ones who have had immediate family interned during WW2?

Its not about going off omn someone but to shed a little light on how the term "Jap" should not be used.

I agree, censorship is never good but when it comes down to it, people pretty much should realize that times are changing and not everything you did years ago still reign true.

I'm not going about trying to start trouble but just wanted to bring out the fact that there are terms that should not be used any longer.

Come on Beej, who are you kidding? You are a Canuck! You folks love everyone don't you? I remember years ago when they were talking draft for the military people were hoppin north to your area.

Anyhow, history is fun either way. I suggest we all sit down and watch the history channel.

I have to tell you all that if XJ's were made in Japan they would not have the leaks, squeaks and clunks that we deal with day to day.

But thats why I love my Piece of Shit.

Wow. You're really on a fishing trip there. From a single reference to an obscure '40's animation, you've constructed an impressive scenerio wherein you champion the rights of the Japanese, the suvivors of Japanese atrocities, the suvivors of war related atrocities in general, the exploits of an outstanding Army unit...and insult my father. besides that, I have no interest whatsoever in your education. I am interested, however, in how far you will carry your little crusade. Please continue.

It was Propaganda. Calm down. We were trying to win a war. Those are old war posters. No one was trying to offend anyone. Context my friend, context.

aaah heck, I have to fess up.

I'm not Japanese by the way and yes where my family is from they hate the Japanese with a passion.

My father personally saw as a child, Japanese soldiers cutting off ears and pumping people's bellies full of gasoline at the local police station in town during WW2. once he even saw a guy get killed after some soldiers layed him down on a railroad track and tied him to it.

My dad was someone who hated the Japanese for what they did to him and his people during ww2. He still harbors these feelings today. growing up I heard it all from him it drove me nuts.

I just wanted to play devil's advocate and see what kind of sh*t i'd get back.

Have a good Labor Day Weekend you guys.

Hmm...Thanks for the support, Beej, but I think I see where this went off track. I said that I 'like' the Bug Bunny cartoon. And, I used the word 'Jap'. I defend the use of that word in the context of discussing an historical issue such as WW II US propaganda. However, it was gouche of me to say that I 'like' the cartoon. I will make an effort here to qualify, although I think it is probably too late to recoupe my reputation with POSXJguy.

So here goes: When I typed the phrase 'I like..' in my post refering to the Bugs Bunny cartoon, the thought I was expressing would be something like this - 'I find the naivete' inherent in the blatand biggotry exressed by this cartoon amusing.'

I know that's not enough to save myself with POSXJguy, he's found himself a crusade, but if he would like to continue to insult my father I can provide directions to a nice little a$$ whoopin'. Stay on focus, POSXJguy. Your target is me, not my parents.
