looking for a write up for a PVC snorkel

buy pvc, drink beer, drill hole in fender

The Bigger it is the more air it will pull. But over 3" I think would look a little stupid. I wouldn't want it to make any wider than the mirror. Do they make square PVC ? Round accesories on an XJ look goofy too.

anyone thought about coming into the rig and out the roof? other side of the pillar? on passenger side, its what most people do with bajas, expect they come in from front to front window, and have a hole in the window (but its lexan/plexiglass windows)

That is a very impractical approach on an XJ.

you could keep it all under the hood and bring it into the cowl, then have a tube comming up along the a-piller out of the cowl. Would probably block your vision and any meter-maid would say you're concealing the VIN plate though.

The engines intake is on the drivers side of the vehicle.
PVC is too soft to run through the engine compartment.
You would have to cross over the engine. Then remove the dash board and A/C system so that you could get through the firewall on the passenger side. Open your hood and look at it, It's just not practical at all.

It could be done though, using 2 1/2" tube around the motor, and back to plastic tubing through yoru blower motor hole (mines fried so why not) and then up out your roof.

well i don't have a writeup but this is how i did mine: i used 3" abs with a 90 a 45 and a 22.5 degree elbow. because i couldn't get the straight section to align with the body, i just heated it up with a heat gun and bent it towards the body. it worked great! i luckily found a arb top on ebay for 30 bones so that fit great with a internal sleeve and the intake side is connected to a intense performance air can and filter. i've had this on for over 4 years and never had any problem with it. it has saved my jeep's motor a few times as well. a lot cheaper than the arb and its got to flow way more, plus i actually like the rugged look of it. anyways here are a couple cell pics: wait, how do i post pics?

The original poster wanted advice on PVC snorkel. PVC is not intended for use at underhood temps. You can do it and think "wow how cool I was able to build this for only 60 bucks". Come back in 6 months and tell us how the PVC deformed, turned funky colors and is overall a crappy mod. ABS is a different story. Metal tubing is another story alltogether.

If you guys are determined to run 15 feet of pipe under the hood may I suggest just using 30' of flexible 3" hose. Duct tape a filter on the end of it and duct tape that to a skateboard. Wrap a life jacket around it call it good.

Seriously if you are ok with cutting a hole in the roof, removing your dash, removing your Blower and running Undersized intake pipe, then why would you even ask if you can?

i hope that bash wasn't directed at me....lol

i know that PVC doesn't hold up well in high temps (deforms and turns brittle), thats why it was gonna be wrap it in a heatshield material, i have the whole design laid out, using all solid pieces, non of the flex tube BS, my main concern is the filter

the way i see it, my options are this

1. use a factory air box that would be sealed and a factory filter, then run the snorkel up the windshield as the inlet to the air box

2. set up some sort of inline filter

3. shroud a filter on top of the snorkel

and the reason why i'm doing this mod is the PO of my XJ got creative (or retarded as i see it, no offense to him of course)

and designed this beauty

Actually, I have been running PVC snorkels for 2 years now with no major problem. Any problem I've run across has been an easy fix.

I've also heard that the fumes from the PVC can do damage; however, If there is damage done, it isn't stopping the motor from running great.

Bottom line: PVC works for a snorkel. It may not be a great material to use for a PVC, but the fact of the matter is that it works.

I think it was crappy for you to call our mods crappy.

I wonder if anyone will respond negatively to this post....lol

the only problem i had with my orignal tip was it got caught on branchs, so i'm on version 2 of the tip (now facing back)

also i noticed no decrease in performance with the tip facing foward or back, or up and down, or even left and right, and yes i tried all them

dude you need to clean you engin bay . :twak:

is ther mud in the filter like the rest of the compartment ? dont get me wrong i think that you have a good idea . maby you could have a longer pace of pipe attach for when you go trough a deep stream ? some sort of a water proof quick/dis-connect ! and then you could attache a nicer scoop with the same connect to alternat when you dont nee the longer pipe .
