dude you need to clean you engin bay . :twak:

is ther mud in the filter like the rest of the compartment ? dont get me wrong i think that you have a good idea . maby you could have a longer pace of pipe attach for when you go trough a deep stream ? some sort of a water proof quick/dis-connect ! and then you could attache a nicer scoop with the same connect to alternat when you dont nee the longer pipe .

that pic was takin prolly 30 minutes after a wheelin trip, i wash my engine every weekend

and here is wat i ended up with BTW

more power to ya. i think it doesn't look half bad.

Hmm, the actual air filter housing looks like it came from a 1st design Lumina car, or maybe an early Z-24 Cavalier. Is that correct? Actually, could have been several GM's, now that I think about it. Just thinking of possible donors...

you are correct, i'm unsure which, i ran a search for the Part# on it, and it came up with a diesel motor, so it may be from a small diesel delivery truck, but yes slighty modifed the late 80's early 90's GM canisters can make great filter housing alternatives

i actaully have several that i'm modifing for other jeepers i know

heres a better pic

oh and to actually answer the question of how i open the hood

gasketed slip fitting

Thank you for the reply. The can that you are showing in the new pic., is it closed off on the bottom already, or did you have to fix that. I remember the car version being open on the bottom, and if the Isuzu type trucks are closed, that would save a little bit of fab/silicone work. Not that I'm afraid of fab work (look at the thread "I got bored today" for a hint of what I mean...).
Have you considered using any of the "ricer" car stuff for the intake systems- molded silicone elbows, "universal" flanges, etc..? Just thinking out loud here.

the true bottom of the canister is now the 'top', hence the PVC drain fitting, the bottom is the true top, luckily i'm running a k&n filter so i dont actaully need to remove the filter from the housing to clean it

i can take more detailed pics if you'd like

Yes, please. If possible pix of the "true top", as I haven't seen one of these closed off on the top, from the factory, anyway. All of the ones that I have seen are actually open on both ends, with the top having a smaller opening, and a grommet/seal on it that matches against the hood.

ok heres one of the ones i have yet to modify

its an early GM style, i think from a lumina actually lol

ill take pics of my modified one tomorow, so you can see how i sealed it and keep it closed

lowes, i believe garden plumping section of the plumping aisle lol, dont really remember lol

another pic of the slip coupling, with the hood closed

Problem with that is they are running too small at only 2". Fine for a Suzuki but you have a minimum of 60 mm just to match the throttle body size but also have to take account of the longer distance and bends and the drag it causes. The tests carried out by Airflow showed that a XJ required a 3" to over come this.

This area looks promising for an engine bay exit and a change of direction to up. Between the hood hinge and the fender.

Would it be possible to box and seal it and use it as a change of direction plenum? Or possibly run a 90 deg bend through there.

Have a muffler shop make a 3" diameter dog leg to move the inlet over to the A pillar. May block vision a bit, but unlikely to cause any real problems. You could even make the up pipe removable and move the cap to the top inlet (in front of the windshield), for a lower profile when the snorkel isn't needed.
I guess there is a reason I've never seen it done this way, just an idea.
