looking to save some $ and build my own snorkel, anyone have a write up for an ARB style snorkel made outta pvc?
CustomCrawler said:anyone thought about coming into the rig and out the roof? other side of the pillar? on passenger side, its what most people do with bajas, expect they come in from front to front window, and have a hole in the window (but its lexan/plexiglass windows)
goodburbon said:That is a very impractical approach on an XJ.
Puttting a hole through the windshield?CustomCrawler said:Please explain :viking:

PVC is too soft to run through the engine compartment.
You would have to cross over the engine. Then remove the dash board and A/C system so that you could get through the firewall on the passenger side. Open your hood and look at it, It's just not practical at all.
All I have to say is HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!cox_xj said:i hope that bash wasn't directed at me....lol
i know that PVC doesn't hold up well in high temps (deforms and turns brittle), thats why it was gonna be wrap it in a heatshield material, i have the whole design laid out, using all solid pieces, non of the flex tube BS, my main concern is the filter
the way i see it, my options are this
1. use a factory air box that would be sealed and a factory filter, then run the snorkel up the windshield as the inlet to the air box
2. set up some sort of inline filter
3. shroud a filter on top of the snorkel
and the reason why i'm doing this mod is the PO of my XJ got creative (or retarded as i see it, no offense to him of course)
and designed this beauty

goodburbon said:The original poster wanted advice on PVC snorkel. PVC is not intended for use at underhood temps. You can do it and think "wow how cool I was able to build this for only 60 bucks". Come back in 6 months and tell us how the PVC deformed, turned funky colors and is overall a crappy mod. ABS is a different story. Metal tubing is another story alltogether.
If you guys are determined to run 15 feet of pipe under the hood may I suggest just using 30' of flexible 3" hose. Duct tape a filter on the end of it and duct tape that to a skateboard. Wrap a life jacket around it call it good.
Seriously if you are ok with cutting a hole in the roof, removing your dash, removing your Blower and running Undersized intake pipe, then why would you even ask if you can?
