Look what I started today

Looks good.. But the reason I went from the body to no body version was that if you look at the b-pillars on the body they are very exposed. and then take that cage into perspective and notice how if your sitting in the jeep and your of any manly size then your shoulder is fully past the cage and only the B-pillar of the body is protecting it. So ultimately the cage is only for the structural integrity? For protection the B-pillars of the cage IMO needed to be out at the body B-pillar area for me. So I had to loose the body pretty much from the A-pillar back. Its looking good though. Just dont go so over craze with the tube cause you will be cutting it out soon enough. Once you realize all that body is just extra weight and in the way for many things. Then your left with a minimal cage and time to redo it all again. those C or actual D-pillars are very weak in that stage. So I figure your adding more in that area as well as the virtual C-pillar area, but other then that call it good and paint it. :-) Whats with the mustang with the low rider convo's on it?

I never did notice the shoulder issue, hmm.....I'll need to look at that a bit closer.
The body doesn't weigh much...at least what is left of it.
And in fairness to the build, its not done. You guys are getting in progress shots without the benefit of knowing the end product goals....

I will build a buggy eventually, its just not going to be this one.

The mustang is one of the wife's cars. Low riders use convos? :dunno:

Anyway, I'm happy with the build.

Are you saying that the sliders (how thick) and cage weigh less than the missing sheetmetal.

I know in my case is was about a wash. but I removed everything back of the A-pillar except the actual floor. the 4drs and hatch and glass alone wieght a good amount. But thats just my case and he I think is keeping the doors.

And hey rick, I wasnt baggin on the work or anything, just my experience in something similiar to this. But I was baggin on that mustang :D

Where the f*ck did I say a Gawd damn thing about making this thing weigh less than stock???

I need to double check this whole F*ing thread and see if I said one mother f*ucking word about building this into a buggy. Or even if I said it would spend lots of time in JV....

Do any of you dumb ass mother f*uckers know where I live?

:roflmao:
Its all good my friends! I know your not baggin' on my build, well no one but Ryan ( :D )
There is not much more tube to be added. A bumper, some pillar supports and then go to the front end...
And Robert I was being honest about not realizing the shoulder issue, I will be checking into that.
And the 44....IT will be for the buggy!

Just a couple of progress shots...

Okay...one more.
100_4032.jpg

The tail lights will be mounted in the bumper area, I'll add some sheet metal in the wheel wells then work around the reciever hitch. There will be some more meat built around the shackles or just plane ol' get rid of the stock sheet metal there and build a box..
:dunno:

I have decided I hate RobertK. That whole shoulder protection thing has me stumped right now!

Well it might not be an issue for you? I am 6'5" and wide shoulders, so it was a big issue for me, even with the main hoop angled out at the shoulder height pretty far, it still wasn’t good enough IMO. that’s the Main reason for ditching the body all together. The super confined quarters inside a interior caged drivers area.

Also all those pretty round bends in the rear, they are just going to allow greater flex and deflection in all those area's. And I take it that your building with speed in mind also? Well that rear shackle area will be trying to push up and back. With what you have so far in tube (I know your Not done) but there’s no where near the rigidness needed IMO. Your going to have to make it a bit 'ugly' i think to give it the needed triangulation necessary.

In a crawler you can get away without worrying about the nodes all carrying energy to an adjacent / opposite tube, even though I and well as others do follow this principle. But when looking at what you have so far, you might want to sit down and look at it again and then proceed with that in mind. In a roll over like 30 mph it would not be pretty with what you currently have or seem to be following IMO. I don’t see any forces on the rear shackle being carried forward, or a front windshield area pushing force being carried rear ward. Theres bends or sheer in each tube that would carry these and other forces. The only structure IMO, currently that has any real integrity that would handle a mediocre speed roll over is the b-pillar. Given that is the main and most necessary area though.

Again NOT trying to bag here. Please don’t take it that way. But sometimes it takes a outside view to maybe being things to light or to show that I am an idiot :dunce:

But it is still kinda purdy. Wish mine was....

I have not had great amounts of time to work on my own junk recently.
My bud's dune buggie, my son's Cherokee and the work trucks have decided they wanted thier share of the attention.
Oh well....I should be able to spend some more time on my junk this week.
The above is the latest update.
Building another overhead and tying in the rear cage to the unibody. I still have more tying in and I hope to finish the fenders. I'm thinking about building the fender skins out of aluminium and using tabs to bolt them on.

Some other picts.

Oh yeah, I decided to dump the rear nurfs...I'll come with a better idea!
