Long bed MJ for a trail rig....thoughts?

I'm on CC, Ive seen some of the bobbed rigs and I plan on my version of that but i think I can get just as much mileage out of really good "slim" and tapered rear bumper that will match what my front bumper does just in reverse.

I agree with all of that. I do like being able to sleep in the back of the XJ, saves pitching a tent but being able to carry stuff with room to spare would be nice. My XJ is stuffed even without the back seat in it. Is there any thing special about the metric ton trucks that would be better over a regular LWB MJ?

I've slept in the bed of the MJ with nothing more than a tarp covering me, in IN, in February.

I've also slept in it with a proper camper shell.

80's S10 shells fit just fine, same sized box ;)

You can cary a ton of stuff on the trail. It makes a great trail work vehicle, cleanup vehicle, or camping vehicle. You will be blown away by how much stuff it will carry and be fine.
kastein pretty much has enough parts in his bed to almost build a second mj at any given time.

I carried a spare engine/trans/transmission/all 4 axleshafts/both driveshafts/radiator/all fluids for the whole jeep/all the tools to install all of it on the side of the highway my first NACFest. I've since toned it down and only carry spare axleshafts (every one except the one I will need), crummy ass ujoints, both driveshafts, a few sets of balljoints, spare rad hoses/WP, a spare tire, all my tools, and a few jacks.

Last year at Fall Crawl a lot of people gave me crap for bringing a spare dana 30 with me... then they gave me crap for needing it and using it and wheeling again the next day. I just can't win :moon:

Really I love it because I can haul a lot of stuff out of the woods. Use it to get firewood at a friend's place all the time, and I've done more impromptu trail cleanups involving multiple couches and tires than I can remember.

on the 80s s10 shells - is that for a longbed or a shortbed? I guess I need to haunt the junkyards and CL.

mine was a longbed.

Here's a picture from when we used to drive it to the trail.

it was an 80's Leer topper someone gave me for free. They told me it came off of gramp's old S10.

Holy crap, I could swear that was a whole different truck.

tellico man, tellico.

and to really blow your mind:

how it looked when I bought it to "Do things around the house"

yeah, don't wheel your jeeps people, it's just bad.

I wheel a LWB MJ and love it. Sometimes the wheelbase hurts you, but sometimes it really helps. I find it to be incredibly stable and have no complaints.

Turning radius is rather poor .... there are plenty of times when the XJs make the turn and I have to back-up, but its really no big deal.

Get a strong drive shaft.

If you leave the stock bed, it will scrape on stuff and slam down sometimes, but with a good bumper and skids, its a non-issue .... although the bed WILL get beat to pieces.

Oh, and you can always replace the bed with something a bit more .... fun.

I'm on my 2nd MJ for a trail rig...both LWB.

The first didn't have a bed but I am leaving the bed on it. Having had 7 total XJ's and 4 MJ's I love them both but I think the MJ is tougher. I'm in the process of setting mine up to carry my family of 5. I have a minivan 3 person seat mounted backwards behind the cab and am caging it in and then will tie in an exo cage around the cab to that as well as some rockers.

Of course I'm one of the idiots who has put leaf springs on the front. It does work very well both on and offroad and it makes a great tractor around our property...especially with the 14B rear end and 5.13 gears. It does take a month of Sundays to turn it when in 4wd BUT I do have a twin sticked D300 so I can disengage the rear end and drag it if I have to. I'm hoping to put 36-37's on it soon.

That's a sweet looking rig!

I like the custom bed idea above as well. Y'all got the wheels turning in my head!

I want to build a moderate trail rig, and also something I can drive 5 hours to the coast and wheel/surf fish on the powdery beaches of NC. I can do this now with my current XJ.

all the drivetrain stuff is the same.

so sure, you can drive it and wheel it.
I used to drive mine 14 hours to Tellico, pull the super swampers out of the back, swap tires and go wheeling.

no XJ can carry trail tires in the back.
The downside is, no passenger space. There were always times I wanted to take friends, but no way to get them where I was going.

I don't have a back seat in the XJ and haven't for years. There are tools, 35" spare, spare parts you name it. No room for a seat. My rig will be on 35's street or trail so no need swapping and I always drive my XJ to the trail and back, no trailer queens in my driveway.

then an MJ sounds just about right for you.

Youv'e already ditched the extra seating, but with an MJ you'll get stronger everything on the chassis and way more room for crap. Alos, said crap isn't in the passenger compartment, so all the nasty smells and the like stay outside.
