Ok..I have decided to put the lift off and just keep what i have and run a locker.
I am still on a very tight budget so.. I know what i can't buy. I want a locker that will do well on a mainly highway Jeep, but still perform on the trail when needed. I have heard of lockers that can be takin out in the winter. I have the facilaity to remove/replace when needed.
I haven't researched this...enough... but wanna post this anyway. I have the Chrysler 8.25 rear end.
i would like to spend $200-300 or more if its worth it. Can I get something good for that amount?
Also gonna run a set of discos and maybe a freebie set of 31s
Yes.. fender triming is already being planned.
Thanks all.

Aussie Locker

These are getting pretty good reviews and you can't beat the price. I think the introductory price is good 'til tomorrow.

I think someone on this board has them and there was a write-up on the pirate 4x4. I wish I could give you a firsthand account but mine won't arrive until the end of the week! :D

That's a great price! and the 4x4 pirate site gave it a good review. They list the Chrysler 8.25 for the rear end of the dodge Dakota. It says it's got 27 splines and cover style 10. That'll fit the Cherokee stock axle. Correct?

I guess you could take a locker in and out but I think you will find thats going to be a big pain in the ass. If you are on a budget I would imagine that you aren't going to be able to pay for the locker to be taken out and reinstalled every year, sounds like a waist of money to me (unless you are doing it yourself).... I don't really know what is available for your axle but I know it's a limited selection.. I would try to go for a limited slip of some sort, great on the snowy roads and good offroad too, especially with only 31's . thats the way I would go. just a thought, hope that helps a little

depends on what year your 8.25 is. earlier 8.25's in cherokees came with 27 spline shafts. later models came with 29 spline shafts.

Locker removal

These lockers go in and come out fairly easily so its a couple hours work each way. I have driven with a lock-right all winter long here in the Denver area and didn't have trouble with it. We tend to melt off in a couple of days though.

the 29 spline aussie was to come out in Nov. now 4 weeks behind. eaton e-locker early 2005.

Try a Genuine Gear Quick Lok or a Lock Right

Almost invisable on the street and excellent lock up on the trail.

For the spline count on the Chrysler 8.25 axle, would a 1996 XJ have 27 or 29?
Depending on the build date it could have either .Look for a plastic tag wrapped around the axle tube between the brake drum and spring pack,IF your lucky it will be there, take these numbers to the Dealer and have them run the numbers, ask for a replacement axle to fit ,that will tell what splines you have OR pull it apart and count them.
It needs an oil change anyway-------
I have had a Lock-Right in mine for over 100,000 miles

quick lock

i had the quickloc in my d44 for all of about 2 months. in order to put it in my carrier the whole carrier had to be removed to get the ring gear off to get the spider shaft out (too thick ring gear). the quick lock works well off road but it chirped my tires around every slow corner, was obnoxious in gas station turning and and pushed the front end around enuf to make tight turns harder on the street (read:parking!). my friends lock right doesn't seem as harsh on road, just clicks a lot when disengaged. that said, anyone want a d44 quicklock cheap?

Detroit True-Trak

I run a dana trac-loc on my 8.25 and a Detroit True-trak on the front D30. When in 4wheel drive, the front gets a bunch more traction than the rear and doesn't make a sound. It's not a locker per-se, but I'm really impressed with the traction I get with it. I'll probably swap out the trac-loc this winter and put a true-trak in the rear 8.25.

mikeyl,
will that locker work in a limited slip carrier? i got a d44 with tracloc, so lets make a deal. (sorry to hijack thread:angel: )
