Im looking to buy a 1998 Jeep Cherokee Classic auto 188k.
GOOD- new tires, new rear end (re-built), new valve cover gasket, interior is spotless, no dents

BAD- Usual leaks- oil pan and rear main

He wants $3900.00. Think its worth it??

I think the bottom has fallen out of the XJ market, and $3900 is a bit steep for a stock 98 with nearly 200k on it. I think if you can pick it up for closer to $3300, you'd be doing OK.

i just picked up a 97 in similar condition with 144k for 1400$
only difference is the clear coat is peeling..

I must say XJ's seem to be valued more in this area compared to others, dealerships try to take advantage of the enthusiast market. I have driven by a white '92 4dr XJ on a lot on south federal, looks clean as do most cars on lots from a distance, and he is asking 3995 for it? Its moved around the lot, sometimes out front others in the back. But yeah, too high for any stock XJ in my opinion.

Yeah, but you can't use lot prices as a measuring stick -- they're priced up because they'll finance people that shouldn't be financed... I drove by a lifted (4.5") '94 on a lot in CS today that has $3995 in the window. Private sale the dude would be lucky to get $2500. Frank is cheaper than me ;), but you need to get it down closer to $3k...

I've seen other years, with lower miles, listed for less.

The market has NOT bottomed out on the STOCK XJ. Modified ones are a whole 'nuther story.

But there are budget buyers and particular buyers out there..... Price generally ends up being determined on how quickly the seller wants it gone.

$3900 for a clean '97+ XJ with under 200K on it isn't bad really.........a couple months ago I sold this '98 SE with 136K and some minor east coast rust for $5000..... The same day it was listed and with two other buyers ready if the first fell through.

But yeah I'll agree that white one would be well bought at $3300

Clean stock XJs are getting harder to find.

I just sold my clean 99 with 125k on it for $4600 in less than 24 hours.

If I were selling that white one I wouldn't take less than $3500 for it.

Yeah Im worried if I dont act on this, then its going to be gone. I might try to talk him down to $3500 for it.

Doesn't cost a thing to look at it. That way you might be able to deal. The 97 I bought the guy was asking 2900. After I pointed out a few issues with it he dropped the price right there 1k. I was able to work it down more.

I paid 2,000$ for my all stock 2000 Classic with just over 200,000 miles and from the original owner. I wouldn't pay more 3000$ for a stock one unless it had rediculously low miles, and even then I wouldn;t pay a lot more. Just because it has low miles doesn;t change the fact that its an over 12yrs old car.

True dat about the mileage! It's nice to have a clean cabin and solid drive train, but you still have to ask why so few miles. In-town miles are harder on an engine than highway miles.

I got beat up by a 20-year-old truck with 80K on the clock. Turns out the little old man who drove most of those miles, held the clutch in while sitting at a light. I had the clutch apart twice before someone more experienced pointed out the crankshaft thrust bearing was shot.

All the same, I'm a big fan of doing a compression test.
