Laid Off Today

Nothing seems to cure a case of the Mondays like being laid off first thing in the morning. It was not a shocker to me and I already had one job interview and was on my way to getting in on another, I just thought i was coming a little farther down the road.

I have a unique skill set and am not worried as of now but I always keep my options open. With that said I have worked in the Civil Engineering field for the last 5 years within the GIS department. I also have a BS in Computer Science and have recently been working with ArcServer. I am very interested in GIS or software engineering work so if anyone hears of anything please let me know.

Getting laid off sucks.
I've been on pins and needles for the last year or so and I've gotten more grey(white) hair in that time than... well... ever.
The past six months has been good, however the last couple weeks has been trying. Tomorrow I will find out if I still have my current job. If I still do, I (fortunately?) already lined up a new job starting Wednesday and I can't back out of it.
I'm not sure how this will go over tomorrow if I still have my current job...

GIS is a very promising field. I only have limited GIS experience, but I'll be watching to see what type of job you land.

Good luck, man.

dammnit josh i told you only to drink on your lunch break and not on the clock ! dammn it. now look what happened. you had it coming....
lol j/k
dude, if you want to start buying and selling jeep parts lemme know id love to quit my job or try to get fired
we could hang out and work on jeeps all day

Good luck... I am thankful that you have a marketable skill set. All of us who are working are pretty thankful right now and pretty sympathetic to the rising number of people in your situation (knowing we could be next).

Hey Josh,

With your job skills, try PG&E...seriously. There are a bunch of jobs postings right now, so click the link below.

Search the "Management and Professionals" job link, which is where I think your job qualities would fall into.

As I recall, somewhere in the on line job application is a part where you can enter in an employees ID that referred you. PM and I"ll be happy to provide you that info....

Try Intermap

That's too bad, man. I know when I work for Sac City they were always looking for GIS people in the Building and Planning departments. Don't know about now, since those depts. have been downsized considerably since I left 3 years ago. Our planning dept. here in Merced County just hired a new GIS guy.

Good luck with your interviews!

Good luck Josh. I think engineers aren't doing quite as bad as some others.

I would have to agree although the land development group, which included GIS at my old employer saw over a 50% reduction at the Sacramento office. It is tough for a lot of people right now and I do feel very fortunate to have a skill set that is still in demand.

Thank you to everyone and especially those who offered any insight. Good luck to everyone out there.

I would say if you have another opportunity and are one edge with your current job then go for the new one. How did it go today Jes?

Josh

Sorry to hear Josh, I hope all goes well for you and your family.

Congrats on your predicament Jes.

Here is an update.

I am getting plenty of sleep and time with the baby. :confused1

Well now about the job stuff. I have an interview with Northrop Grumman as a software engineer and have been in contacted by HDR and URS for their GIS groups and interviews are being scheduled, my old company was a competitor of both firms.

They should love you...I have faith. Good luck.
Nice to have time with the family, enjoy it while you can.
