Mine does the same noise, but it is the front pipe knocking the frame just beside the trans support. Maybe yours is doing the same.
knocking sound when turning steering wheel?

I think I found it. It's the stabilizer shock. It's just moves back and forth. I can also rotate the tie rod and stabilizer bars. They shouldn't move should they? I think if I replace the shock, that will tighten everything back up.? I guess i'll just replace the shock and see what happens.

I was just wondering, can i replace the rubber bushings instead up buying a new shock? there is nothing in there holding it in place. it's just knocking back and forth. it looks like i could take the bolt out and stick some bushings in there, tighten it up and drive on. is that possible? i've never replaced anything in the suspension or steering before, so i'm not sure what i can do or not do. any suggestions?

The intermediate steering shaft can click too as it has tiny little u-joints that go bad. I know, mine did.

My money says Dr. Dyno is correct. I just had the same problem with my 89 XJ and replaced the tie-rod end from the Pitman arm to the drag-link and now the problem is solved. If you need the part number (NAPA Only) let me know.

If the noise still persists, here are a couple of other sources of clicking.
If there's a little slop in the steering box, it will click when the engine is off, but may not do so when running, because the fluid takes up some slack. Also, check the universal joints in the steering column shaft, and the tightness of the clamp bolts on them. The joints can develop some end play which doesn't show up as actual play in the steering but can still click when you wiggle the wheel.
