I just got a 1990 Isuzu Trooper for $400. These things have a TON of room on the inside. The engine has just been rebuilt. (V-6) But I think the guy broke a ring or two on one of the pistons when reinstalling them. It fouls up two of the spark plugs on the driver side after it warms up and once it get up to operating temp it loses all power and begins to smoke a lot out of the driver side exhaust. Other than that its a nice ride. Clean body, interior. Electric locks windows, cold air, cruise. What should be done with this? I was either going to fix it and sell it or maybe give it to my sister because she has been wanting something 4 wheel drive. Opinions anyone? Anybody have any experience with these?

I drove an 89 Isuzu pickup for like 10 years. I couldn't break it. If you decide to wheel it, it has a monster strong corporate 12 bolt rear, likely geared 4.56 from the factory. However, to compensate for that axle gearing, the tranny gears are pretty damn tall. Lift parts are few and far between for these things, Calmini is the only vendor I can think of. Check out the isuzu board on pirate, there will be a TON of info!

Stay ahead of the rust, I loved mine prior to the XJ, the reclining rear seats made trips with the then young kids actually pleasant. I had the 4 banger and it did not like NGK plat plugs, burned the valves in fact.. The V6 as far as I know is a GM motor. My frame finally was reaching a point in the rear near the shock mount area to where it would no longer pass inspection so sold it... 200K it owed me nothing considering it was only $12K when new [LS model too] thing was built like a tank... got rear ended by a pontiac grand prix on interstate 80 during a snow storm and ended up with my rear wheels on the grands A pillars. After the state police got done with paperwork and said I could leave I drove off his hood [they were pissed they assumed I had a ride] and headed into work with just paint from the pontiac on my gas tank skid and pintle hook [peeled his roof back some too]... For my family of 4 that was a great set of wheels with tons of cargo space.
Note: your rear bumper behind is already setup for a military style pintle with the reinforcing already in place..on mine all I had to do was take 4 plastic plugs out and chase the threads..
