June 24 or 25 NIGHT RUN?

Bent

September Is National Recovery Month

Well I thought I'd try this again with a little more notice this time. I'm available to make either night. Depending upon the rigs of those that are interested, the trails can be moderate and either easy or difficult.
I'm not sure if Claeghorn is open yet or not, but we could start out at Cedar springs(Silverwood dam)and run up through Pinacles(behind Arrowhead).
Another option would be through Thomas hunting grounds, then down to seven oaks and up through converse station or clarks grade.
Or John Bull and then to Gold mountain "backward". There is also Santa Ana river trail, that could be ran after taking mostly back roads from Thurman flats (just past ranger stn on Hwy 28) to Barton flats, then pavement until Heart Bar and then back to dirt.

I was thinking of meeting ~7pm so we can be ready to roll by dark. I would expect to be off the trail by around dawn sometime.

THIS WILL NOT BE A NAXJA EVENT.

If anybody's interested post here by Thurs. night or PM me by Fri. afternoon.

Count me in...pm me when and where in case I forget to check back here.

Well John,
It looks like it's just going to be us. Does in make any difference to you as to which night?
BTW, I ran up to check on Cleaghorn last night, it's still closed. From what I saw in the area, prolly because of run off damage. Looks like we'll be going off of Hwy. 38 above Mentone.
Meet up at the Ranger station just past Bryant there on 38, 7:00 pm.

Anyone else?

UPDATE:
To avoid confusion about the location of the Ranger station. Let's meet in the McDonalds/Stater Bros. parking lot on the corner of Lagonia(Hwy.38) and Wabash there right before Mentone. That way you can pick up ant nfood or drink items if need be.Give me a call if you have any questions.

BTW, wear or bring long pants and a light/medium jacket. I was up the hill a few weeks ago and it gets pretty chilly up there. Boots wouldn't hurt either. Oh yeah, flashlight too.

How many malls did ya hit? :D

All I got to say is that Holcombe Creek, West to East (backwards), in the dark (3:30am), with lots of water was a hoot. BTW, I think I set a new personal record for ballancing the XJ on it's nose, WAY better than when you were behind me on John Bull!:scared: I got to hand it to C-Rok though, awsome clearance with his bumpers, front and read. :shiver:

John, did that picture turn out?

Tired and still slightly puckered.

That should hold you for a while.

I’ve got to say I had a blast. And a half. There were three rigs that turned out. I took the lead with John and his wife Amie bringing up the rear. That left the “Shirley” rig in the middle, which would be Johns neighbor Jared in his white XJ. The Shirley rig was named for Jared’s co-pilot who for some reason thought hi name was Carl. Go figure. :dunno:

Rather than go all the way up the hill on Hwy. 38, we started things off kind of on the easy side of things. After meeting up at Stater Bros’s we drove on up to Angeles Oaks to disconnect and air down. By now it was 8:00 pm and dark enough to qualify as a night run. From there we dropped down to Seven Oaks via the dirt road (Mill Creek?) maintained by the county. We ended up taking a moderate little trail that runs into 1N54 just before Clark’s ranch. Even in the dark you could see the amount of work that the OHV volunteers had put into the trail during their adopt a trail work day. They did forget to take down the “locked gate ahead” sign though. I think the Shirleys were pretty much used to just dirt roads by the way they were grinning. ;) The drive up Clark’s grade offered some great views of the Inland Empire, Redlands, and Moreno Valley out to Corona as well out towards the arm pit of the world. Normally the only way to get much of a view of the lights is to go up Hwy 330, which sucks.

When we got to the summit we headed east along 2N10 over to Moonridge. We stopped and topped off the tanks there at the Stanfield cut off and headed across to Gold Mtn, through the rock garden and over onto 3N16. By this time Jared was getting pretty good at keeping his front pumpkin off the rocks. For some reason the garden seemed easier in the dark, either that or it was a lot flatter than the last time I was there. Who knows? Maybe the larger rocks were scared of the dark.

Rather than head straight to 3N08 and Holcombe Creek we detoured along 3N02 over to the entrance to John Bull. I’d like to try JB at night but last night was not the right time. Besides that, there was a U-Turn yet ahead that needed turning. Never mind how we ended up in those peoples camp; they must have hid the other exit.

Once back onto HolcombeValley road we started making pretty good time, for the most part anyway. Being used to coming out on the other side of John Bull Flat, I kept thinking I had missed my turn. But hey, you can’t get lost in a jeep.

I’d have to say the best part of the run was Holcombe Creek, East to West. Even the section when we first crossed the creek was a lot more fun with the sun turned off. After all the snow this year there are a lot more off camber areas at either side of the creek crossings. I’ve never ran 3N93 west of 2N60X that way before. Between the water running down through the rock garden, going up it instead of down and then with the dark, it was a hoot. Both John and Jared made it up without a strap and without any body damage. The Shirleys were open/open and fell into a few holes a few times each and still didn’t get bit.

It was still dark when we got through the last rock garden and back onto 3N16 and headed for GreenValley. I think it was about 5:30 when we got to the main road, aired up, re-connected and headed down the hill. It would have been nice to have dropped down 3N34 through Dishpan Springs and Deep Creek. Well maybe not, the sky had already turned the light on. Oh well.

It didn't get interesting until after the front wheels got to the ground. :laugh3:
