John D Super Slo-Mo Rebuild

I've been going insane with a leaking hub seal on this 14B. For some reason it doesn't want to seal on a 35 year old corrosion pitted surface, lol. Looking around for options and found a Speedy Seal for 30 bucks. Time will soon tell, but I suspect this will be a good fix.

Old surface (after I cleaned it up).

Speedy Seal kit.

Installed and a much better seal surface.

I'm on vacation this week so my list of items sould be completed.
1. New front brake lines.
2. Front bump stops.
3. Engine/trans skid plate.
4. Transfercase skid plate.

can you report on how you end up liking the front bump cans? Really tempted to do mine up front since I already bought the rear setup from them.

Also, any concern about how that style of can retains the bump can? Many pre-runner guys on the ol' interwebz don't like it since it an isolated pressure point on the can. I ended up swapping the rear cans on mine to the pinch style with the bolts just out of fear of destroying new bump cans, but I don't think they would work so well inside the coil spring.

I will report back. I'm not really concerned about the single mounting point. A friend has run these for 3 years with lots of landings at the dunes and no issues. If you wanted to you could easily put a second pressure point. I agree with you assessment the pinch type would be a tough fit.

My airbumps have been mounted like that for 4-5yrs now. Works fine.

Much appreciated! Keep up the good work.

Good to hear.

Finally got out on the trail yesterday at Rocks & Valleys and had a great time. Everything worked very well and I couldn't be happier. The shifter, tires and front suspension changes were awesome on the rocks. The only issue I had was landing a nice wheelie at the top of a steep hill climb blew my right front off the tire off the bead. The backside was still on and we were able to ratchet strap it to fill it back up with air and keep going.

After I cleaned it up today I was out for a road test and had a small issue with my u-joint at the rear yoke while doing a WOT 1-2 shift. It always makes a horrendous noise that sounds like breaking parts when I do this and I'm pretty sure my pinion is pointing at the floor when it happens. A 4-link is in the plans but it's a long way out there so I think I'm going to have to look at traction bar options for now. I used a tree saver to hold the d-shaft off the ground and put it in 4-low FWD to get home... 10 miles. Thankful once again for the Atlas :)

I'm no expert, but judging by the wear on the end of the u-joint cross (900 miles on this joint) I would say the needle bearings were crushed a while ago.

How do you like the tires compared to your old swampers

About 100x better... Tires did really well and they seemed to get better as the day went on. I ran them at 12.5 psi, they cleaned out quickly, wrapped around rocks nicely and stuck well even when wet/muddy. It's early still, but at this point I would buy them again. They do really well on the street too in dry or wet conditions. I plan to hit the dunes the week of the 22nd and I'm hoping they perform there too.

How did the bump cans workout? Do you have some in the rear? Any idea on pressures you are running them?

They worked great at 0 psi :) I didn't have any nitrogen in them and I set them up as hard stops for the rocks. I will be hitting the dunes in 3 weeks and that's going to be the real test for them. I run the Prothanes in the rear.

Walt @VAhasnoWAVES hooked me up with a sweet spare tire. A brand new 37" MTR to put on my extra H2 wheel. Now I need to figure out where/how to carry it.

When I got home from my last work trip I found this. I'm pretty bummed since I thought the speedy sleeve fixed it. It's possible I drove it onto the spindle too far and it's not catching the inside of the seal. I don't know, I'm frustrated with this.

The road handling went to complete crap after the Rocks & Valleys trip ans a little investigating revealed 25 year old king pin bushings a tad worn. This is my first time playing with a king pin axle and didn't really know what to look for but a side-by-side with the new bushings makes it obvious. I wanted the bronze version but I didn't have a few days to wait for them. Next time they get sloppy I will have a set of bronze ready to go.

I also got a traction bar kit from Barnes. The tube will be 2x.250, is DOM necessary?
