Duties: The incumbent performs a variety of duties related to the Off-highway vehicle program on the district, including performing vehiclular and foot patrols; providing public contact regarding off-highway vehicle use; law enforcement (ability to complete level II law enforcement training requirements); collecting and recording inventory data, care and policing and maintenance; preparation and administration of special use permits (i.e. enduros), administrative and resource monitoring work; serves as a workleader. Encumbent must have the ability to obtain an ATV safety certificate, a trail tractor certificate. and have or can obtain prior to employment a state class M1 motorcycle license..

Location: Willows Area Information
As the Glenn County seat, Willows is the center of a rich agricultural area situated in the Sacramento Valley, 90 miles north of Sacramento on Interstate 5, and only a 45 minute drive to reach the mountains to the west. The population is approximately 6,000 within the city limits and, in addition, there is a large and prosperous fringe area. As is the case in other valley communities, Willows experiences warm temperatures throughout the summer months. Winter temperatures rarely fall below freezing.

LOCATION: The Mendocino National Forest Supervisor’s Office and Grindstone Ranger District are headquartered at 825 N. Humboldt Ave, Willows, CA. The Forest Staff, the administrative branch, and Grindstone Staff are located at the Forest Supervisor's Office.

SCHOOLS: Willows has schools through all grades including Butte Community College extension courses.

CHURCHES: Willows has churches representing almost every denomination, and social and business organizations that contribute to a well planned community.

This hospital includes an emergency room and clinic. The town of Chico (35 miles to the northeast), has two full service hospitals, urgent care centers, and numerous physicians in specialized areas.

This is a family practice, staffed by two full-time physicians, and is run by the County. This practice is currently accepting new patients and are members of the following health care plans: Qual-Med, Foundation Health Plan, and Blue Cross/Blue Shield preferred providers.

HOUSING: At the present time houses are available. Prices range from $65,000 to $150,000 in most cases. Rentals range from $300 to $550 per month.

TRANSPORTATION: Local taxi service and County subsidized bus transportation between Willows/Orland/Chico available. Amtrack services are available in Chico.

CHILD CARE: Licensed day care available, some provide preschool. Preschools are also available.

RECREATION INFORMATION: The Willows area is famous for good duck, pheasant, dove and quail hunting. Located eight miles south of Willows, is the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge that provides walking and auto tours - always a pleasant experience. California State University-Chico and Butte College offer many additional recreation attractions in sports and entertainment areas.

There is a public swimming pool at the City Park on Laurel Street. Parks in Willows provide play equipment for children, baseball fields, horseshoe areas, picnic tables and barbecue pits. There is an exercising par-course at the park on Sycamore Street, tennis courts are available and a skating park will be completed by August 2000.

There is one health club, which offers a variety of weight equipment and exercise programs. Annually in May, Willows holds a celebration called the "Lamb Derby" where a talent show is held at the Memorial Hall. A parade is held on Saturday followed by a lamb barbecue at the park. Many other activities are scheduled during the week for wholesome family fun.

Opus Theater offers three separate movie cinemas featuring newly released movies and video rentals.

The Glenn County Theater Company based in Willows offers three to four plays/musical casting local talent each year.

Annually in September, the Willows Chamber of Commerce hosts a Car Show, which encompasses a weekend of numerous activities, with approximately 400-600 cars on exhibit.

There is a nine hole golf course located approximately five miles north of Willows. There is also Knowles Shooting Clays for the sporting clay enthusiast, which offers individual and competition for novelists as well as challenging courses for the professional.


UPPER LAKE LOCATION INFORMATION

The Upper Lake Ranger District is the south western district on the Mendocino. It is located 2 - 2 1/2 hours north of San Francisco and 1 1/2 hours from the heart of the Napa Valley Wine Country. The district manages approximately 260,000 acres and offers a comfortable rural lifestyle with the convenience of easy accessibility to the shopping and other amenities available in San Francisco and the North Bay area.

The District offers a vegetative mosaic including dense stands of brush, open glades or meadows, oak woodlands and mixed conifers. Annual fire activity on a five year average is 12-15 fires in the 2-5 acre class with a project size fire every other year. The Upper Lake Engine responds to a significant number of assists for the CDF and local districts.

The town of Upper Lake is not a full service community. The population is approximately 2,000. The nearest full service community is Lakeport, which is located 9 miles to the south on State Highway 29 and has a population of approximately 5,000. There are several other communities located around Clear Lake. Clear lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in California and is known for excellent bass, and other warm water, fishing and water skiing and other water oriented recreational activities.

The average temperatures for the area are: winter 55 and 31, summer 93 and 55. The cost of homes in the area range from $75,000 - $120,000 for a three bedroom home and rentals range from 350-900 per month. The recreational opportunities are hard to beat. Just 70 miles from the Cape Mendocino Headlands, sightseeing, salmon and steelhead fishing and excellent seascape photography are just a few of the many things to do here. There are also a variety of hunting opportunities available throughout this portion of California.
