My wife shut it down to get the mail and now it won't even turn over. There is power to everything else just not starting circuit it seems. I figure it could be the starter solenoid so I'll have to test that or see if there is power getting to the solenoid. At first glance the connectors look way different so I'll have to figure out what is what. Does the Jetta have an ignition switch or what should i look for upstream if there is no juice getting to the starter solenoid? There is no safety switches for starting it in gear or with clutch down etc. Can't find my Bentley manual so any input appreciated.

nope-no safety's. I now know which one is the switched 12V supply and gonna test/jumper it tomorrow in the light to see if power is getting down there or if the solenoid works.

well she's all fixed. the twisted power lead between the solenoid and starter body had completely rotted so ground it down and frankensteined it with some overkill 1ga welding wire and battery lugs that were laying around. looked jeep worthy on there.
