jeep compass problems

hey guys, i realize this is a non-tech forum, but i felt it didn't belong in XJ and MJ tech discussion. this is going to be long winded, but i would truly appreciate it if you would stick it out until the end.

my sister has an 07 jeep compass. FWD, 2.4L. 59K miles. a few days ago she called me saying she heard a loud tapping/clicking noise coming from the engine bay, that got faster as she accelerated. just from hearing the sound over the phone, i assumed it was an exhaust leak. she called me back a few minutes later and said her RPMs were high, but there was no power. once again, possibly a major exhaust leak.

went to her house the next day, and started it up. listened with hood open, didn't hear a thing. as soon as i started driving it around, i could hear the click. sounded like it was coming from front left/ front left-middle of engine bay. so obviously, exhaust leak was out since it only happened while moving. as i was coming to a stop, it started bucking like there was still forward motion but it was "catching" (for lack of a better word). i assumed it was probably a CV axle issue.

jacked it up, yanked off the tires, started snooping around underneath. driver's CV axle would rotate about 1/8"-1/4" either way, passenger side axle was fine. none of the CV boots were ripped or torn, no grease leaking out, no signs of wear. had my sister start it up and put it in drive while i was underneath. driver's side CV axle was wobbling like a warped pool cue running across a table. not bad but noticeable. noise was coming from the transaxle area. decided to yank the shaft out. got it out, and listen to me carefully....gear oil (i.e. GL5) came out the axleshaft hole. now i've gotten differing opinions on this part, but the general consensus is that newer cars have a seal seperating the transaxle and transmission. I'd say 95% of the work i've done on cars has been RWD so this is new territory to me.

anyways, pulled the boots off the CV axle and i don't SEE anything catching my eye, but once again, CV axles are not my "forte" so i may be missing something. I will say that the slip-portion of the shaft (joint closest to tranny shaft where the joint slips inside, I'm assuming to compensate for turning radius) will NOT come out of the housing. It's 50/50 split when talking to buddies about whether or not it is suppose to come out or not.

Here is the bottom line. I need to know for SURE whether it is the CV axle or the tranny. My sister is 31 with a 18 month olf daughter, and was unemployed for 10 months before taking a VERY low paying job, as a 31 year old with a bachelor's degree. I'm taking a personal day off work tomorrow to help them all day with this issue, and hopefully we can get it panned out. Life is hard for them right now and the last thing they need is to be buying a tranny or having it rebuilt, or even jsut throwing parts at it and hoping something sticks. ANY suggestions or advice whatsoever would be greatly appreciated, and thanks for taking the time to read this.

ALSO, any of you who might work for a jeep dealership, clarify this for me. What is the warranty on drivetrain for a NON-original owner. i've heard no warranty, 30K, 60K, 100K, unlimited, and everything in between. Jeep is hesitant to give out any info on whether it is or not without going into the dealership itself. THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE!

IXNAYXJ-call yesterday and got the run around. told me i needed to bring it in for them to know for sure. being that i have worked for several dealerships, albeit chevy and BMW, this is pretty much just a way for them to at least get a diagnosis hour of labor out of you, assuming its not under warranty.

joe-not sure. is there a surefire way to check?

i've heard the compasses had the CVT, not aware of whether there was a "standard tranny" option or not. not a fan of dealing with new-ish cars so i don't keep up with them very often.

Does it have a clutch pedal? The Compass never came out with a conventinal automatic.

Looking at the manual online right now. The CVT trans takes a green colored fluid, the manual trans takes ATF+4.

Looks like you have an all wheel drive and you are leaking fluid from the power transfer unit. The specification is 80w-90, and the fill plug is at about the 9 o'clock position on the passenger side of the vehicle.

bryan-got your PM. i'll get with you on that here in a few. no clutch pedal. not all wheel drive, definitely just front wheel drive. when i get over there i will check where the fill plug is. thanks for the info.

Thanks for all the help so far everyone.

my bad.

the full VIN, to eliminate any confusion, is

1j8ft47w47d140020

You are out of warranty, that vehicle only had basic 3yr-36k and powertrain 3yr-36k. just perforation and extended fedral emissions left.

The cvt should only have CVT+4 fluid (really expensive stuff) the fluid is green. there should be no gear oil, since it is only a front wheel drive. Service fill capacity is 8.03 pints. To check the fluid level you need a special tool dipstick and a scantool for fluid temp, compare the two on a chart.

thanks tattoo for the clarification

i dont BELIEVE it is a CVT. Now, like i said, i'm an old school jeep guy, so I wasn't even aware of a CVT until this whole fiasco. but the CVT is basically the tranny where you can manually shift the auto, right? If so, it is NOT the CVT. it has L-D-N-R-P gears.

now, assuming it's not a CVT, can someone please explain to me where the hell to fill up this mystery lubricant that came out when i pulled out the shaft? I've got all but about a pint of it in a clean bucket that it drained into. At this point, being that i'm damn near positive that it's a trans problem and nothing else, and it's out of warranty anyways, i just want to get it back together and figure out where to go from here. Once again, thanks for all the help guys.

Compass is only available with a manual (5 or 6 speed) or the Jatco CVT transmission.
Under the intake snorkel that is labeled "remove for battery access" there is a black plug in the top of the dipstick tube it just twists out of the tube. It also has a round plastic label on it that specifies the fluid type.
Make sure the fluid is VERY CLEAN, just a little debris can cause problems with the cvt.

once again tattoo, thanks for the info and the clarification. I'll make sure the fluid is clean too. Thanks again.

well, got everything buttoned back together, and while filling the CVT4 back up, i took a closer look at the fluid, it WAS green. once upon a time. it is now burnt green/brown. there was also metal flakes throughout it. i will be on the phone tomorrow with junkyards within 300 miles of dallas to see who has one. if any of yall happen to know a place, please don't hesitate to post it up. Thanks for all of yalls help through this, me and my sister's family are incredibly thankful. Yall are awesome!

As stated warranty is up. Our dealership was told by chrysler we are only allowed to replace CVTs as an assembly and not to even attempt repairing one.....must be top secret haha. Price from Chrysler is through the roof so you'd definatly be better off ifnding a used one.
