jeep canyon wheel question

Do wrangler canyon wheels rub or come close to the leaf spring with 31's on an XJ ?
I had Canyons with 31x10.50s on an XJ with a 3" lift, there was no rub in the back, but at full lock it rubbed the lower control arms.

That may depend on the springs and the tires. They did with my OME HD springs and Firestone Destination MT's. The spring clamps that OME uses are mounted right were the "bulge" is on the tires so there was less than 1/2" clearance. I went with 1" spacers.

thanks guys. does any body have a pic of how close the tire is to the leaf ? are canyons the same backspace as stock 7" cherokee wheels ?

dave

mine were close with stock springs and 32x11.5

I've got a set in the garage I blasted and painted. I want to run a bigger tire but nothing crazy (31's I think)...I'm either going with the OME suspension kit or the RE 3.5" kit with IAS struts. Seems this is a good setup for most?

Wrangler Canyons are 8" with 5.5" BS. 7" Jeep wheels have 5.25" BS.
Heres the complicated part (not really though). On an 8" wheel the center line is at 4". That means that on an 8" wheel with 5.5" BS the mounting flange is 1.5" outboard of the wheel center line.
On a 7" wheel with 5.25"BS, the mounting flange is 1.75" outboard of the wheel center line.
Since the tire is always centered on the wheel, theoretically, 8" wheels with 5.5BS should allow .25" more clearnce than a 7" wheel with 5.25BS.
In short, the Canyons will allow just as much clearance as the 7" Jeep wheel.

good info for those of us used to offsets instead of backspacing.....so, 15x8ET37 or so for the Canyon wheels.

I'm considering buying some canyons, but now I am confused after reading this thread.

So I was looking at the generic steelies with 4.5" backspacing (15x8). And everyone seems to say those will be fine w/o rubbing. Since these are 5.5" backspacing, wouldn't it mean they stick out further? From this picture it appears it would work that way:

So can anyone else clue me in for what I am missing? BTW: These would be going on some 33x12.50's.

Shouldn't it be 0.25" less clearance with the Canyons? 5.5 BS - 5.25 BS = 0.25 closer to the leaf spring

A 4.5"BS wheel will stick out an inch "further" than a 5.5"BS wheel. In your pic the top is the part that goes against the drum/rotor!
