Been putting this off for two years, but I no longer can. I am one of the lucky recipients of the famed '99-'01 XJ Paint Jobs. This is not too terribly common, but common enough. 'Nother local club member had this on his '00 Limited. Really bad oxidation on the roof coupled with a decent amount of Crow's feet, which are present on the hood as well. Well it's finally started to take it's toll. The paint is chipping off fairly rapidly and the roof is starting to rust.

To look at the rest of the rig, you'd never suspect something like this was going on up top. Decent closeup here of what the rest of the paint looks like.

I had the exact same thing on my 99 and the paint on the hood also started to crack. I paid to have both painted as I didn't want to see who'd die first the body or the engine. Now I'm finding little tiny spots on the rear quarter where the clear coat/paint/primer has gone away and there's tiny rust spots. I'm planning on using the dremmel to clear off the small spaces and use touch up paint to fill them in. I didn't know this was common on those years I always figured I just had bad luck on the factory paint.

I'll more than likely be getting the whole thing sprayed. Not an expense I'm really wanting to have. But I don't half ass anything. If I get it done, it'll get done.

And yeah, it's a bit of a "common" issue, you weren't the only unlucky soul. Kevin might chime in here about his experience. I want to say his was only 5 years old at the time? Dealer pretty much told him to take a hike.

I would have loved to been able to afford to re-paint the whole thing but the hood/roof alone was $900 (I wanted it done right as well). My XJ is black so I don't notice any difference between the two paints at all anyway.

My 2000 is doing that exact thing on my roof and I was thinking about herculining the roof. Mines not that bad though, only a couple spots I figured since Im always throwing stuff up there it would be a good way to fix the paint issue and protect it some... Any thoughts? Not trying to hijack!

Mine did the same thing (Exact same color as DJs) I had the hood and roof repainted and it turned out really good. I ended up with the added bonus of having my Lebaron hood vents painted to match.

Interesting....not running into that problem on mine, but i've heard its pretty well known that the 97+'s have some shotty paint on them.

Only oxidation i'm starting to get is on the rear hatch and the top of the rear bumper...both were repainted a little over a year ago as part of the repair from one accident....im considering taking it back and getting them to do it again...

Damn DJ!! I could say several things right now but I think I'm going to leave this one be. :D

Damn, what seems to be the problem here? Not enough clear coat from the factory or what? Glad my 96 doesn't have this problem, even though the roof always looks like crap. I don't bother to wash up there as most people aren't tall enough to see it anyways. :shhh:

Are you trying to intimidate him?

I figure if I'm gonna get called out on something I might as well do it ya know? Anyways...DJ and I have already met so I don't really need to worry about making a good first impression. :D
