So, I finally determined that my Grand Cherokee wouldn't run because of a bad computer. Andy had a 98 one in it, and it would run for a few seconds on it and then die. Well, I looked and looked and looked some more, but wasn't able to find a 97 computer for it anywhere in a junkyard. I did some research in All Data and determined that the only thing the ECU interfaced with was the BCM (Body Control Module). The BCM controls things such as a security system (which my grand doesn't have), power door locks, gauges, information center, etc. I figured that if the computer and the BCM were from the same vehicle, then there would be a better chance of it working. I settled on a 96 computer and grabbed the BCM from the same vehicle to go along with it, and swapped them both...

Nothing... it did the same exact thing as the 98 computer...

So, knowing the computer was the issue, I did some searching online and found one from a 97, and it appeared to have the same exact serial number as the original computer, so I dished out a Franklin and the guy shipped it my way. Well, after I got it, I noticed that one number was different by one digit. Where the original had a "6", the new one had a "7". I had serious doubts about it, but decided to try it anyway since I had already bought it. I plugged it in, and turned the key. It started as usual, but I kept waiting on it to shut off. It didn't. I let it run for a minute or so, revved it up, etc, and all seems well. Now I just gotta get it put the rest of the way back together, get it painted, and send it down the road to a good home!

Anybody need a grand Cherokee in a few weeks??? Lol.

Nice!! party1: Glad you got it running!!!

LOL.. glad you got it man. I think its safe to say that one kick a few folks butt's in the diagnosis department. I was just wondering about this project the other day. Now, get back to work and get it together!

yay, now we can move it out of the way for my jeep :D

Yep, and don't forget about Dan's (The Box) FJ, it'll be down Sunday. I'm just glad its mobile again b/c It was a serious pain not having that bay open. Now I can actually use my shop again!

the fj will be a tight fit in the door..... we might have to wich the frontend down to get it out of the garage ;)

Was the different digit the last one? If memory serves me right that would denote Security system, and lack of.

Congrats on getting it running, i had a bit of a problem diagnosing a bad ECU in the wifes ZJ as well.

Team Willys congrats bro!
now on the question you asked... i'm (sorta) in the market for another dd, as my 89 xj is starting to have real (given me headaches) issues (some mechanical/age, others caused by me).
depending on what you are askin for it, maybe we can work something out?

Glad it's running...I've got a ton of history with that Grand!! Dont know if your aware of that or not....Drive that thing to a new owner!!

i serously cant wait until you mash the gas and hear the 6.0L SING! ;)

Speaking of gas pedal, I haven't been able to find the electronic one it needs. I might need to make a call to Knox auto on Monday.
