Is this camera mount a bad idea?

I agree 100%. I appreciate everyone putting up with my questions.

Since this thread kind of turned to cages, I have a question about them. Let's say I had the ability to buy either harnesses or a cage (ultimately I will get both, but until then), is it a bad idea to get one before the other? If not, which one should be purchased first?

get the cage first. if you get harness first and you have the harness tight like they should be and roll you will not be able to duck and will most likely be crushed. Also if you get the harness first you will not be able to mount the shoulder herness correctly

in my dd, i run a cage with stock belts, and am currently saving4/choosing my harnesses. it would NOT BE a good idea to race like this, unless your cage tucks REALLY tight, or you are a small guy. while i havent hit my head real bad, it's possible! i need a proper helmet. try to aim for being able to put your fist sideways between the top of your HELMET and the cage, thats about what ive got, but when i do race buckets, i will be dropping the seating position a lil bit to get more clearance.

it's DEFINATELY a snow ball! ive been thinking i should get a 2nd job, and im not even interested in racing, just want a fast jeep.

XCM - link to the cage without a helmet pic.

if you are going to run a cage without harnesses you'd better be running a good quality helmet, you are putting steel closer to your head and increasing your risk of injury. Read the rollcage thread in the thread of the month sticky at the top of this forum section, i linked to it there, we had a lenghty discussion on this exact subject.

and this guy wasnt even racing, bad rolls can happen any time! it only takes a second of lost concentration to enter whoops way too fast, roll, and get seriously XXXXed up.

race vehicles are no joke, you either go all out, and do it safely, or you can get seriously hurt. sometimes jeepspeed is played out to be this thing you drive your dd out to race with, thats just not the case.

I have some GoPro cameras coming before my next race and I want to be able to run one of them inside the cab. I don't have a cage to mount them to. I would like to have it in the middle of the back seat looking out the front window.

My idea is to get a flange mount and steel tube, and mount the flange to the tunnel between the front and back seats. This would allow me to screw the pipe in to the flange and mount a GoPro to it while racing. Then when grocery getting with the kid in the rear seat, I can simply unscrew the pipe from the flange.

Recommendations to install a cage will be met with hostilities from anyone in my family that doesn't sit in the driver seat, due to funds.

Sounds like it should work just fine, but considering the 170* field of view of the GoPro, I'm thinking you'll be shooting more interior action than drivers perspective, if that's what you're going for.

Here a GoPro clip that show perspective on rear seat area mount as you've described and also dash mount.

Here's a non-HD version, seem to pick up alot of noise through the chassis....needs some isolation from the cage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQHACvAv7zU&feature=related

I've seen them cage-mounted in the approx. area of where a front passenger's head would be, which provides a great view of the driver in action and the course. Here's a clip that shows you a couple of different perspectives from two locations on the pass side orientation, as well as from the dash.

Someday I will have to dig out my old helmets and post up all the dings and marks on them from smacking the cage. And none were from accidents! It is amazing how much things can move when you race. I can sit in the car in the shop and I can stretch and pull and can't get within 3-4" of the cage, but on race day I know every time my helmet smacks the cage.

Absolutely wicked picture there. Ugh.
