I have A '97 and '98 Ford E150 with the 4.2 V6 both have had a gasket fail between the head and intake it lets in water into the cylinder and bends a rod at a round 60,000 mi. has anybody had this happen? :firedevil

Nope, always had Mopars growing up. ;) Only the occasional waterpump, ballast resistor, alternator, starter, or control box...

That's it though. Never had any 'engine' troubles with our slant 6s or 318s, all with well over 250k miles on them. :D

both of these are service vans and the down time hurts. just got a '04 with the same engine now i am worried it will happen again.

Yes, It IS just you.

Friends don't let friends buy Fords :twak: .............must be spending all their R&D money on Powerstrokes......

Have the F150 year 97. Same thing happened to me. But I fixed it before the rod bending. Ford has come out with new gaskets that aleviate the problem. You can do a search on the problem through Google. I don't have the links but there are several. Talk about a Class Action suit is on going. Save your receipts.

My old work van was a '00 E 250 with that same motor and its pos auto transmission went out at 30K. Due to the serious lack of power in the 6 with all the weight its pulling, (I never puller any trailers or anything just the weight of the van) the van I drove was run pretty hard but the engine was still going at 60K. That doesn't say much, but it is a Ford so I was impressed, lol. They should have never gotten rid of the 300 straight 6. Thats the best motor Ford ever built IMO.

yea the only way to have 6 cylinders is in a row.

I'd have to disagree here! That is one of the best motors they ever built! One of the others is the 302! Especially the 88-94 HO!

Earlier in the spring one of my co-workers blew up the engine in a latemodel (98?) Ford V6 in a F150. He's had the truck since new, it's fairly low mile (60k IIRC) and never lacked oil & filters. He claims it's rarely been abused.

One of the leadup symptoms was noticing an intermittent 'miss' and finding evidence of water (pasty white goo) in the oil filler neck. Never any water in the oil, or oil in the coolant :dunno: we chalked it up as him not driving it long enough to fully cook off any condensation. (he lives 15 mi from work) It wasn't long to start making some wonderous noises and it threw a rod :viking:

He got a reman motor and swapped it in, next thing he found is that the exhaust manifolds are cracked :D

Luckily this is not 'his' personal truck...it's a company rig, so they foot the bill for the repairs. Still though, there has to be a million of these POS V6s out there waiting to claymore.

found out yesterday that the rebuilder knew exactly what happen. said that is the most common failure on the 4.2. the first one happen at 80,000 in Y2K on the '97 put a new engine in, the '98 happen yesterday at 63,000, we got the '04 the first of april, sold the '97 about a week ago with about 140,000 no tranny trouble on any of them. Ford said sooo sorry not our fault out of warranty. all company vans. still sucks.
