what is the "right thing"?
problem is, the "right thing" is usually defined with subjective, personal, and emotional attributes.
the "right thing" is not a universally understood, or generally recognized philosophy or political position, and desperately vauge to be sure.
ask a socialist/liberal what the "right thing" means....
ask a religious-right zealot what the "right thing" means....
see if you get anywhere.
the thing we need to get back to as far as the role of government is, is understanding that it only exists to perserve and to execute three basic functions:
protection of the motherland, borders...
protect free trade, economic stability...
settle disputes...
