Iron Maiden fans...

I love Metal, but stay away from the Satanic stuff. I want to branch out from Metallica and Megadeth, and Pantera, but don't want to get into any Satanic stuff like Slayer. How would you rate Iron Maiden? I know Metal bands are black and all, but some just use it for shock value when others are serious about being Sadistic like While Zombie, Marilyn Manson etc. Dave Mustaine of Megadeth says he is a born again Christian and will not tour with Sadistic groups, he has really been more anti-government U.S. govt with UFOs, aliens, hidden agendas, etc. He sure has a lot to talk about lately after 9/11, lots of conspiracy truths and lies floating around.

Sorry to get in with these general questions to you hard core Maiden fans (it seems this thread has wound down a bit), but I'd like to expand my music a bit. I'm going to the Gigantour Megadeth show tomorrow, Fri 8th in Oakland, lots of bands I never heard about, should be interesting. :D

there is rock and roll for Christians too. Creed is a very good band, highly underrated IMO.

I'm going to Gigantour tonight. Anyone besides Megadeth that is any good out of these bands:

Lamb of God
Opeth
Arch Enemy
Over Kill
Into Eternity
Sanctity
The Smash Up

I've heard of Over Kill and I think that's about it. I really just listen to Metallica, Megadeth, and Pantera.

I'll have to listen to some Maiden this weekend. How's the new album? Are they still as hardcore as ever? Megadeth is, they had a slight poppy album called "Risk" which is actually pretty good, just not as hard and loud as they are known for.

Opeth is my favorite metal band to come along in the past 10 years. I would go to that tour to see just them. Musicians are unbelieveable (pay attention to the drummer) and vocally Akerfeldt cannot be matched. he can't. Though you will get your death metal type vocal screaming he will on the drop of a dime break out into the most beautiful voice you have ever heard. Usually all in the same song. His range is outstanding.

Huge Maiden fan here. Seen em first in 87 on the ...Somewhere tour, then in 88 on 7th son, than last year as headliner for Ozzfest 05.

Bruce's solo from 98, Chemical Wedding is a classic as well.

UP THE IRONS!

Dude-Just saw this post...LOVE OPETH TOO!!!!! Hell yeah! Sometimes I'll put on Damnation just to go to sleep it's so awesome! You know they are on Gigantour 06 right? Too bad there is no Indy stop...sigh. I did see them in 02 or was it 03 with Dark Tranquillity and Lacuna Coil in Columbus Ohio. That show was AMAZING!!!!

Hail fellow Opeth fan!

Thanks so much for the feedback on the bands on Gigantour. I saw Gigantour last summer when they came to Sacramento, I cannot recall the bands, but it was good and Megadeth was awesome. I went to see just them and saw some other good bands as well.

I'll leave work early to make sure I see all the bands today, especially Opeth. I'm driving 80 miles to Oakland to see the concert today from Sacramento.

Here is a link to the tour dates/band lineup etc.

I see they will be in Chicago later on in Sept., other places as well. It will be worth it to go see that concert especially if you don't have to take a lot of time off work and can tour Chicago a bit as well. The tour comes to the Congree Theatre on 9/22 in Chicago (my home town, well at least the burbs that is).

Any feedback on the other bands?

Any like Maiden, or are they so different sounding. I'm not down playing them, just seriously asking. I hear their vocal style is quite melodic.

I've really got into System of the Down and love how the singer goes all opera and then crazy death yelling the next on some of their songs. They are so crazy! :laugh3:

I knew there had to be a few out there! I saw them last year at Sounds of the Underground and also Headlining with Pelican opening up. If you haven't, you REALLY need to check Pelican out. All Instrumental however the soundscapes they invoke. Oh, man they are awesome.

I have a Lamb of God release and I saw them live last year. they seem to be in the forefront of this new metal age, they drew the biggest crowd reaction by far the last time I saw them at a festival show (makes sense since they headlined it). They are worth checking out. Just be aware, they will make Maiden and bands like System of a Down sound top 40 (as will Opeth). This is by NO means a slap on Maiden, SOAD it is just a different form of metal.

I never got into Overkill however a buddy of mine is a massive fan. They have been around for YEARS (probably at least a dozen releases) so they should have a pretty good/refined set. I can't comment on the others.

Report back after the show. I'll be interested in your reaction.

Do any of you guys have a chart of the top Metal bands? I know this is very subjective and Metallica will be #1, AC/DC, Ozzie/Black Sabbath be up at the top. Do you guys consider a band sucessful without hitting the big time and selling multi Platinum? I really like Megadeth and Countdown to Extinction and Metallica's Black album hit me straight between the eyes and I'm like wow, they are good. Now I know why all those hypies as school where those black band shirts! :)

Where would you say Megadeth and Maiden rate with Metallica and Ozzie? I know I really don't care if some snobby critic doesn't like the band I do, but I'm curious if there is a rating chart etc. I know some bands love to stay somewhat underground and resist "Selling Out".

My friend who came with me to the Gigantour last summer in Sac is a huge Dream Theatre fan and I enjoyed them as I did Static X (I think they were called). I have to take some notes, otherwise I'll mix the bands up. I got some ear plugs and plan to be in the 1st few rows. None of these bands do weird stuff to the crowd like Ozzie taking the head off the bat etc?

Are you kidding? Disconnect from the mainstream media and just dig into what you want to listen to regardless of charts. Go to Borders and pick up a MetalHammer or Terrorizer and they usually have a cd or dvd attached to check out bands etc.
Here are my faves--Nevermore, Dimmu Borguir, Cradle of Filth, Behemoth, Slayer, Hatebreed, Soilwork, InFlames, Dark Tranquillity, Katatonia, Anathema, Acherkocke, Amorphis, Lacuna Coil, Strapping Young Lad, DragonForce, Between the Buried and Me, Nightwish, Within Temptation...so many...
Good luck on your findings.

At the moment, until I hear Opeth and/or Lamb of God tonight...my favs are and it's diverse:

Metallica, Megadeth, Smashing Pumpkins, STP, Nickelback, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, POD, Papa Roach, Sublime, Bob Marley, Hendrix, grunge/Seattle scene (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, etc).

I'm a huge Pumpkins fan and think Billy Corgan is a genius, he also grew up close to me in the Chicago burbs so this doesn't hurt either.
