ipod's and accesories

Creative (which is the guts in the Dells) uses WMA, MP3, and a couple other types also.

I have this one in 30gig, it's about $200 also, but a bit bigger, so not real good for jogging or whatnot:

Is there a consencice on the FM transmitter too? Or is that what everyone is talking about in the quality?

Re: FM transmitters: don't, at least not if you're concerned about sound quality.

They've got two problems: one is interference from local stations. If you don't live in or near a major metropolitan area this probably won't be an issue, but if you do it will. Here in L.A., they're more or less useless particularly when you get out towards the fringes of the county - the station that was blank and OK to use in LA suddenly gets bleedover from an out-of-town station and you can't find a good slot anywhere for it to work on.

Problem two is one of compression - not with the MP3s as such, but rather with the FM signal. FM stations have a very narrow bandwidth, so in order for them to keep to their assigned slots the FM signals are effectively compressed prior to transmission. However, the method used to do this is very lossy and results in noticeably degraded sound quality over CD or MP3. Since your iPod is now a small FM radio station, that same loss is going to be evident in the sound quality received by your head unit. This isn't a 100% accurate description of what's going on in FM transmission, but it's close enough for our purposes.

One other option you may want to consider that sits in about the middle of the price range for these things is one of the factory radio adapters for the iPod. The only downside to this is that it requires that your factory stereo have been equipped for a CD changer and that the changer controls are accessible from the front panel / steering wheel / other location. Not having a changer in my Jeep I've never really looked into this as an option so can't say if it would work or not, but it may be a possibility for you.

Geeze, daughter just got one, Ipod, for graduation. Guess I'll start looking for a front aux head end. Do they make a 12v adapter for the things ? Going to have to order another vehicle specific mount like I have for my cell phone to keep the thing up out of the way.

I calculated on this HD I can play my music nonstop for 16 days! My other hd is up to over 2 months! Mine leans heavy on the heavy side of metal-Opeth, Nevermore, Iced Earth, Slayer, Dimmu Borgir, Behemoth, Corrosion of Conformity, Zeke, Cradle of Filth, Inflames, etc. Think I'll get a Creative player instead of buying into the Apple/Ipod hype.
I love my friend's Sony PSP. He compresses movies and then puts them on a 512/1gig flash and watches full movies on it. NOT on the disc.
