ipod's and accesories

I got this to listen to the muzak....just need a antique cassette....

I thought the iPod was dumb from the get go. My gal kept talking about it, wanting to get one. She finally came home with the $300 one (I think it's 40GB?). My buddy is all into that stuff and he came over and downloaded iTunes onto my PC. I gotta say...it's pretty sweet. Basically, my buddy put 1200 songs on my laptop and then we sent them to the iPod. I love the thing. I'm getting an external hard drive that I we'll put all the music onto so I can have back the 4GB it's currently taking up. When I mow the lawn or go for a long bike ride the iPod is always with me. I want one now. My head unit is going out and won't read some CD's anymore (even store bought ones). Anyone know if there are HU's out there that I could just plug the iPod into? In her ride we use the tape adapter but it sucks arse.

Alpine has an exclusive deal for head-units with Ipod controls. You'll pay for it though.

cheaper is to find a deck with an auxillary input on the face, it just uses a standard head-phone type jack, so you just get a male/male cable.

Here's a starting point for ya: Crutchfield's CD head unit list sorted by auxiliary input. You could probably dig up considerably more by looking for the same under CD/MP3 players, tape decks, etc.

Personally, I'm planning on doing the Alpine head unit plus integrated iPod adapter route if I ever have money again. It sounds great and is dead easy to operate while driving.

Not anymore... Clarion, Kenwood, and Pioneer all have units now. Alpine's acutally seems to be about the cheapest for once, rather unusually.
 
Ive been thinking about getting a Mini Ipod. Im wondering two things though: Can you put cds and songs that you already have onto it, and is it worth it to get the warentee?

depends on what warranty you're talking about, as a former ( ;) ) Best Buy employee, working sales in the department selling Ipods, and seeing what got returned, I still think their warranty is well worth it on Ipods and other digital music players.
 
Wow I didn't know you couldn't play WMA format music on an IPod...

guess I should get going researching them..

Someone mentioned above there are apps out there to convert to the apple format from CD's and MP3's... does it also go from WMA to the Apple format?

Most my music is in CD image form for easy burning and mounting via daemon tools or Alchohol 120% but I do have some WMA music I'd like to use from before I understood the best way to store an EXACT copy of my CDs.

Does that program let you convert to the apple format? or will I need to convert to MP3 and then to the apple format?

I actually like the Ipod Shuffles because they are basicly a USB RAM drive... no moving parts.. less power requirements.. so no fear of dropping it... it doesn't have a HDD to ruin by dropping it...

The only downside would be the reduced storage space.. simpler controls and no display...

funny I was wondering when someone would hook some headphones to the USB RAM drive I'm already carrying my music on :)

I bought the Belkin one as well. The one that plugs into the cigarette lighter and cradles the mini iPod. I took it back though, the sound was not the quality I need.

I bought my iPod because I spend alot of time in planes (with my Bose noise-cancelling headphones), rental cars and hotels. I have nearly every CD burned to the thing. I have had it for one month and hate my music now!!!

By the way-> if you want the mini iPod go with the 6gig. You WILL run out with the 4gig.

Whats the point of getting the mini when for $50 you can get the regular I pod with 3500 more songs?

Is there a consencice on the FM transmitter too? Or is that what everyone is talking about in the quality?

personally, I see the only point of the Minis to be for jogging and such, I have about 20 gigs of music on mine, and all the important files on my computer backed up on it also. I also FAR prefer the Creative players to the Ipods. Cheaper too.

sound quality on the FM transmitters ranges from CRAP to almost decent. the only reason I have one is I got it cheap and it's nice for other people's cars that don't have auxillary inputs.
 
I looked around and my daughter wanted a sony mini-disc which is what she uses. Has one of those cassette adapters to plug into the stock am/fm/cass radios in her TJ. She gets about 80-88 songs per disc, was considering getting her a mini-disc dash unit but to me it's kind of limiting with not taking normal CD's. I like the idea of head unit that has a front aux input plug. My son just put a clarion db455mc in his TJ. Has some feature called 'music catcher' that will record like 40 songs and store them in memory in the unit, so far I have heard no complaints about it though I think having these remotes that come with them are a bit over the top, it's not like you have to get up off the couch and walk across the room...
 
new head unit with an auxilary input on the front? I do beleive that is the way i am going. My CD player is also not reading some CD's. Thanks for the info guys! I too, being lazy myself, appreciate the research ya'll ave done. :laugh3:

I have the 4 gig iPod mini, I absolutely love love love it.
I just put it on shuffle and go.
It's perfect for biking and jogging, which is really all I use mine for.
and it's so cute, Apple rawks.

yeah, I loaded all my cd's onto mine. and the warantee, that's personal preference, I didn't buy one.



what type of case are you mini owners using??
 
Just added info... saving a song on a portable music player in WMA is retarded. The file size is large and cuts into your drive space. The Apples play an apple format m4p, which is a variable lossless file. Good luck converting the m4p to mp3 or anything, it's a pain in the a$$hole- but if you need to It CAN be done. Once you download i-tunes, that can be used as your playlist on your computer, you can burn and rip cd's through the program- and also it will burn (and read) the m4p format music and convert it back to wma (or your normal cd format) ... I have to go, I don't know what I left out....
 
AS to a case, i picked up the aluminum case for it. It's on a swivel belt clip and has a glass cover over the screen, so, no scratches. Problem i had with it, is, first day, the screw holds the case to the belt clip worked its way free. So, after dropping the ipod off my side, i then went with a little loc-tite. Problem solved. I use my ipod at work where there's no FM reception in this warehouse converted to a manufacturing facility. And, instead of changing cd's every hour, i went with the Ipod. So far, 444 songs and not quite at half full. Set it to shuffle and enjoy!!

Agreed... WMA's are quite bloated for no good reason... better than a WAV right? :P

I've been meaning to find a good program for converting to MP3....

Sounds like the apple's need to use it's own format is quite limiting.. I'd prefer not to use a proprietary format....

do the dell and creative models use an MP3 format or something else?
