I had to take my XJ to the dealer to get fixed (window under warranty) and went up to that parts department. I was able to get a list of the exact specs of my jeep, about 3 pages long, all he had to do was put my VIN# and print it out. Cool.
I found out that I have:
AW4 Trans
Lock-Up Torque Converter (not sure what that is or does??)
Command-Trac Part Time 4WD System (is that a NV231 Transfer Case??)
Dana 30 Front
Chrysler 8 ¼ Rear

none of this should be a suprise to you...

you either have a AW4 (auto) or an AX15 (manaul)
as for the lock up torque converter (every aw4 has one)
command trac = 231
D30 up front, No suprise here....
8.25 out back....yup!

BTW: why is this in the Modified Tech Section?

much stronger
No, not really.

If it's the 27-spline 8.25 the axle shaft diameter is actually smaller. The tubes are larger on the 8.25, but I'm not sure about the wall thickness compared to the D35. The 29-spline axle shafts are just a little bit larger than the D35 shafts, just enough so that if one procurred a 29-spline 8.25 for cheap it would be a worthwhile replacement of the D35. A D44 or Ford 8.8 would be a much better upgrade in regard to the axle shaft strength.

So how do i know which one i have?

What year is your XJ? All 8.25 axles after '96 (and some from late '96) are the 29 spline variety, which are stronger than the D35 and the earlier 27 spline version.

What you got is called a build sheet or something like that. I found out mine has keyless entry, although I have no remote... :(
