I may come off as the token asshole for saying this Opie...
If you truly wish to serve your country and risk your mortal life in doing so...
More power to you...
While in the service of our country you may be asked to perform and suffer all sorts of humiliating, crappy, boring, interesting, great, unique and outstanding and admirable duties...
and while being subjected to all this...
you can advance your education, and get paid for it...
Appealing, isn't it?
Think it thru...
As appealing as the benefits may seem...
You are still signing the next couple of years of your life away...
Being a veteran, I applaud your interest...
Being a veteran, I feel obligated to warn you...
it's not for everyone...
and joining during wartime for educational purposes is questionable...
Get everything in print up front...
Or you might wind up overseas welding plate steel armor to humvees for the next 3 years and the only learning you'll get is creative drinking with powdered koolaid 101...
Wish you clarity and honesty in your decision.
when i read this post the first time, i think i read it differently.
Gil - my intrest in the armed services is not entirely educational - I have always felt a need to serve our country, and understand, that I will be asigned to whatever duty that i end up with.
I think that my mom would shit a brick if she even knew that i was considering a military career - and I dont know how to deal with that - because making a decision like this effects more than just me and I understand that for sure.
In all honesty, i really need to sit down with a recruiter and talk things out, read information and then talk to the rest of my family (regarless of blood relation) and then go from there.
I probably will not do anything with the militart until i graduate from school, because I have a hard enough time remembering last sememsters stuff that applies to this semeseter, much less being able to remember it after i have been on tour for a few years.
I honestly havent heard/read enough about it to know what choice i would make when i get to the end of school...
I might get offered a job and take that and never get to serve, or i might have trouble finding a job and then sign up for OCS...
After thanksgiving break, i will talk to a recruiter - i cant even drive to their office right now, and by the time the heep is runnin, thanksgiving break will be here...
thanks everyone for all of your posts, it does help.
