Army Reserves / Active Duty

not sure

probably wont do anything till after college anyway - (no desire to do ROTC)

they have a "Light Wheel Vehicle Mechanic" position? i guess i could call it a position that sounds interesting to me...

One of my BIL's MOS is "Light Wheel Vehicle Mechanic". He has been in 3 1/2 years now. He hasn't lifted a wrench since leaving tech school. And he has gotten two trips to Iraq.

that is discouraging...

i suppose there isnt any place in the armed forces for someone with a hip replacement.

so where the hell is my pension

Bro went into the AF at 18....Vietnam boys. Spent his time there refuelling B-52's in Taiwan. He is now in his mid 50's, made full Col. (highest rank in USAF with no flight) in 2002. Due to retire next year or so. A pic from a short time ago...

He worked his way up, slow but sure, got a lot of respect doing it that way. I do not get serious much, but saying I am proud of him is an understatment. the Air Force has been good to him, he STILL speaks very highly of it, and his choices.

It is good advice to think long and hard about this decision, it WILL change your life...and the life of those that love you.

One of my best friends is in Air Force Reserves. Has been in for about 2 years.

He works on C-130 landing gear.

He's always been sort of a jokester/slacker. We can't say that about him anymore. A BIG change for the better.

There are days when I THINK I should have joined one branch or another. Then there are days when I KNOW I should have joined. I still think about OCS from time to time.

Good luck with your decision.

my son in law (that makes me sound so old) is in the Air Force.
he is stationed at Eglin AFB in the Florida panhandle, surrounded by miles and miles of State Forest. Eglin AFB actually leases the property to the State of Florida. Anyway, when I was visiting, I seen at least a 100 off road vehicles. I hear that property is an off roaders paradise.

Hill AFB near SLC Utah. I believe it is qyuite a few hours from Moab. But, is in the Wasatch Mountain Range. I am sure there are endless possibilities to off road there.

With your interest in automotive, you should have no problem breezing through. Why wait, let the Air Force pay for the rest of your College.

Good Luck,

btw, learn how to speak French. we'll proably have to save those bastards again some day.

I'm a light wheel mechanic and spent 8-12 hours a day six days a week wreching on trucks in Kuwait, and I've got the scars to show. Granted they were M818s, some Korea-era. Guess it depends on the equipment you get stuck with. We're getting rid of the antiques for new trucks with five year warranties, but it will take a few years because we're the national guard.
I've got seven months left and (urk) considering re-upping. I know-I'm crazy.

My B-I-L is an Air Force mech. When at Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix, he drives people around in staff cars, drives a wrecker for the shop, and babysits the parts room. His first trip to Irag, he ran a forklift unloading shipping containers onto flatbed trucks. The second trip he was on a road building crew, doing 'edger' work.

Honestly, it has been really good for him. When he first married the wife's sister #2, he was a mouthy little punk who barely could keep a job. He is a stand-up guy now. He still has momentary attacks of youth. I just wish I still did.

It's the Chicago way.

I may come off as the token asshole for saying this Opie...

If you truly wish to serve your country and risk your mortal life in doing so...

More power to you...

While in the service of our country you may be asked to perform and suffer all sorts of humiliating, crappy, boring, interesting, great, unique and outstanding and admirable duties...

and while being subjected to all this...

you can advance your education, and get paid for it...

Appealing, isn't it?

Think it thru...

As appealing as the benefits may seem...

You are still signing the next couple of years of your life away...

Being a veteran, I applaud your interest...

Being a veteran, I feel obligated to warn you...

it's not for everyone...

and joining during wartime for educational purposes is questionable...

Get everything in print up front...

Or you might wind up overseas welding plate steel armor to humvees for the next 3 years and the only learning you'll get is creative drinking with powdered koolaid 101...

Wish you clarity and honesty in your decision.

when i read this post the first time, i think i read it differently.

Gil - my intrest in the armed services is not entirely educational - I have always felt a need to serve our country, and understand, that I will be asigned to whatever duty that i end up with.

I think that my mom would shit a brick if she even knew that i was considering a military career - and I dont know how to deal with that - because making a decision like this effects more than just me and I understand that for sure.

In all honesty, i really need to sit down with a recruiter and talk things out, read information and then talk to the rest of my family (regarless of blood relation) and then go from there.

I probably will not do anything with the militart until i graduate from school, because I have a hard enough time remembering last sememsters stuff that applies to this semeseter, much less being able to remember it after i have been on tour for a few years.

I honestly havent heard/read enough about it to know what choice i would make when i get to the end of school...

I might get offered a job and take that and never get to serve, or i might have trouble finding a job and then sign up for OCS...

After thanksgiving break, i will talk to a recruiter - i cant even drive to their office right now, and by the time the heep is runnin, thanksgiving break will be here...

thanks everyone for all of your posts, it does help.

This actually is important.

MWC Elections are now in progress in the members forum. Vote accordingly, and may the best men win.
