What branch are you thinking?

Army Reserves / Active Duty

not sure

probably wont do anything till after college anyway - (no desire to do ROTC)

they have a "Light Wheel Vehicle Mechanic" position? i guess i could call it a position that sounds interesting to me...

If you are going in with a degree you can go to OCS. only problem going this route is if you have any student loans they won't pay them off, but if you inlist they will pay them off. Officers make more in the long run, and the military experience helps big time with finding a job.

Hmmm...

Lets see...

Young...

Single...

Somewhat technically inclined...

Go combat arms and get paid to blow shit up...

Go hardcore and get jump wings, an air assault badge, a ranger tab and then go for the Green Beret...

if you're gonna stick your ass out...

Might as well hang it ALL the way out...

Way I see it...

If you're out there playing a deadly game...

Might as well be a hunter/seeker then the prey.

in the long run? the officer makes twice as much the first day...

problem with that is that if i am an officer, i wont get the hands on training wrenching on military vehicles that i would should i go GI

When I said long run I meant after you take into account the 60k the army would pay in student loans in the first three years as a grunt. But i agree the hand on would be a heck of a lot more as a GI.

For the record, a GI (Govt. Issue) is any military member.
What you are wanting to be is non-commisioned.
Officers are commisioned.
I wonder if one can go non-comm for a few years and have their student loans paid off and also get some good experience, then go comm and live the good life and not have to pay off those loans.
I wish I had gotten a degree before I went in.

When I was seriously looking into it, they said I would have to go non commisioned for three years, get out then start over comissioned.

I may come off as the token asshole for saying this Opie...

If you truly wish to serve your country and risk your mortal life in doing so...

More power to you...

While in the service of our country you may be asked to perform and suffer all sorts of humiliating, crappy, boring, interesting, great, unique and outstanding and admirable duties...

and while being subjected to all this...

you can advance your education, and get paid for it...

Appealing, isn't it?

Think it thru...

As appealing as the benefits may seem...

You are still signing the next couple of years of your life away...

Being a veteran, I applaud your interest...

Being a veteran, I feel obligated to warn you...

it's not for everyone...

and joining during wartime for educational purposes is questionable...

Get everything in print up front...

Or you might wind up overseas welding plate steel armor to humvees for the next 3 years and the only learning you'll get is creative drinking with powdered koolaid 101...

I Wish you clarity and honesty in your decision.

I couldn't agree more, Gil.

Actually, I wish I had taken more than a welding class while I was in.
GI Bill doesn't last forever.
