Important

Is there any reason at all I should have to use starter shims on a modern GM V8? Replaced mine on the 8.1 a few weeks ago and it would grind a little after starting, attempted to shim it which seemed to make things worse so I took them out. Now I am having all sorts of grinding and problems starting, wondering if the shims were ever needed at all or if it is a crap reman starter.

Ring gear on the flexplate looked OK at first glance, but suppose I should spin it over by hand and check all of it. I will be pretty mad at myself if a crap starter took out my flexplate. The pinion gear on the starter looked fine too though so I'm not sure what the problem is. Pinion not retracting quick enough?

Well the adjuster was out this morning to look over the GTO, should have numbers this afternoon.

Did the one you took off have them?

No it didn't have any. Just wondering if anyone else has swapped one and had to mess with shimming it. The mounting surface on the block looks machined so I'm having a hard time believing tolerances still suck so bad that I need the 1950s solution.

from my quick googling it appears as though one starter needs them and one does not, depending on which starter you get.

It took me 3 tries to get a starter from Advance, one wasn't actually stocked and the other didn't even look the same, although it was the same part number. So of course I'm pretty frustrated with the whole deal at this point.

This might just be a case of "you get what you pay for", I should go to Napa and buy a brand new one and if I still have problems at least I'll be confident it's my fault and not the starter's.

Called a local driveshaft shop today about getting a shaft lengthed and told me 300 dollars roughly. Called tim woods, 319 shipped with a flange for the 8.8. Pretty much a no brainer, now I just need to do some measuring.

Is that Tom's brother?
I have a local guy who built drive shafts all day long for about $100.00.

i'll give both a call, I swapped in a sye after a little problem with a hack and tap. I guess it changed that much that i need a custom shaft now.

Anybody getting health insurance on their own? I need to try and do something for 90 days when I go to new job.

My cobra from work will cost 1,000 per month. I can't justify that I don't think.

Unless I missed it on the sponsor page, Tom Woods isn't a NAXJA sponsor.

They do hook us up with gift certificates and sweet leather jackets though.
