Important

Looking at a Chicago-area trip in the coming months. Would like to take Case to see Michigan Ave and the museums etc. I need to catch up with John and Cindy to get the inside scoop on Hawaii for our anniversary next year and thought I would try to see if the other NAXJA peeps may be up for a lunch or dinner one night. You Chicago guys, what's a good way to take in the sites affordably?

I'd be happy to host a get-together. Cindy will probably be busy for the next few weeks, then not so much until the end of August, just give us a couple weeks notice if you can.

Don't know Chicago, know Hawaii.

Anyone well versed in patent laws? My company is stuck in the middle of a frivolous intellectual property suit right now and its really unfortunate. They are trying to settle it out of court since IP lawsuits are such a gray area right now. Unfortunately, it seems they are rolling over and paying a large settlement ($500,000) because its going to cost more to fight it. I know that IP patents are a hot topic right now but I don't know what if there are any good ways to fight them.

Here is a perfect summary about what is happening to us...and yes our lawsuit was filed through Marshall Texas just like they talk about here...their initial suit was $17 million. Unfortunately people are getting laid off because of it. Complete bs

No-one other than a IP lawyer will be helpful. They are the only ones who can give a real legal opinion and in the end it all comes down to money. Emotions have not place in these decisions.

Its not that IP laws are a grey area, the Laws are very clear. The problem is that the patent office does not always do enough research to understand what they are granting. I have read many patents that were granted that are standard practice in the field and extremely vague They Lawyers have worked the system to the point that everyone losses and they get rich.

401 North Michigan Ave?

Your biggest expense will be parking.
You can price line a hotel for <$100 per night, but they will charge you $50-$75 to park there plus parking when you go elsewhere.
If I were you, I would find someone you know who lives near a Metra Station, leave your car at his house, and use public transportation while there.
I know a guy who lives on a dead end gravel road out in the boonies but is still 30 mins from a Metra station. That guy might even come in to the city for a day.
Think how "urban" Case would feel riding the subway with his cowboy boots!
We could even stop by Mr. Excuses house and pee off of his front porch.
"waaa, my kid is sick."
"waaa, my wife had to work late."
"waaa, I got sand in vagina."

Case will have that "WTF" stare on his face more than once, but that is part of the reason for the trip is to culture him on things outside of rural America. He is pretty well traveled for a young kid, but it has all been within the continental US thus far. Thinking that if we could line it up and you have room, we could come up to your place and crash for a night and then the next day go into the city and then use public transit for a few days.

That would be awesome John. I am thinking it will be sometime late July depending on my work schedule. We will be in touch with plenty of heads up notice. Would be great to catch up and see you and Cindy again.

Yeah, that's my worry is that the owner is trusting his lawyers who aren't well versed in IP law. It just seems like we are paying more than what it would cost to fight it, but obviously I have no idea...but if we lost the suit, I'm sure the damage would be pretty severe.

The company suing us basically had a patent stating they invented the process for recording a live presentation. The process they describe could fit any video recording ever made, however, because they refer to it specifically in the context of recording a presenter, they were allowed to patent it. We werent the first to be sued by them and we won't be the last unfortunately.

Hopefully i can take some time to catch up with you guys. I have been wanting to go to the museum's with my boys. i know you said affordable but if you're anything like me you will want to avoid any "free days" for the museums or the shed aquarium the line usually wraps around the city. if you can pack a lunch or hit a subway before getting in the city it would save you a lot of money on lunch, eat at one of the parks in the city or right on the beach. i haven't done anything like that since my younger kid was less than a year old.

city pass.

will save you money if you plan on hitting the museums.

I'd pay to park over Chicago public transit.

That is somewhere I will disagree with you.
So you have a whiff of vomit now and then, so what if you do not keep your feet moving your shoes may stick to the floor, so what some of the rider "bulge" out of their seats every now and then.
Just be off of it by midnight everything is fine.

Im pretty sure you can still drink beer on the metra. also

I saw a guy get pepper sprayed at train station downtown chicago, then they tried taking him down and he took off down the live track towards Cicero.....

No CCWs though...bet that is part of his complaint.

let me know when you come through. would be great to see ya. like seanR said i would highly recommend public transportation. if you help with specifics let me know.

cheers,

jj

listen to dan...berwyn doesnt mess around with parking...smh

Fortunately public transit will take you to a lot of the cool places in the city...it does that quite well. We always parked at midway airport in the cheap lot if we were visiting then took the orange line to downtown or soilder field. Costs under $15 to park per day I believe and then its just a couple bucks to and from the airport. Never had issues with it. When you park you do have to take a shuttle bus to the terminal but its pretty easy to do
