Important

Does anybody know if there is a way to check to see if a np249 t-case is good without it being in the vehicle? Ours in our zj is shot and we are wanting to replace it with another one but want to make sure we get one that isn't toasted. I know we can swap in a 242 t-case and be done but we would like to keep it the 249 t-case.

I can't think of a good way without dissembling the case. The 249 in my old ZJ would only get tight after long trips. (basically after it got good and warm)

I need a 242 that works behind a 46RE...

Yes you can swap the input gears out of your 249 and put it into a 242. Only thing you have to watch out for is the gear cut change in 1995. Find a 242 from a Jeep after 96 and swap inputs and you will be good to go. Was gonna go that route on my last zj before I sold it

That's pretty much what I found when I was thinking of doing it. 4.0ltr ZJs usually had a 242. The electrical part is simple. Don't forget to grab the shifter bezel too.

well I have some experience with this.

it's gonna depend on what shaft your trans had. As ken alluded to some had a wierd pilot shaft. I can say with certainty that you cannot put one of those on an Aw4.

not sure how it would go the other way, but it wouldn't be right. Can you take the input gear out of your 249 and put it in 242?

the planets and such may very well be the same. Worst case you figure oput which one you need and then order a brandy new input gear for 242.

I THINK it will probably fit, since it's 23 spline (right?) just compare the input shaft length and make sure the 46re output doesn't have the goofy pilot tip.

And yeah, ask me how I know a 231 from behind that funky early 90s ZJ auto trans bottoms out on the output shaft of an AX15 about 1/4" before it seats properly on the mounting flange... :hang:

That is how I learned how to take an SYE back out of an NP231 and put it in a different one! :banghead:

slow down there... it'll work in an XJ for sure.

I can't guarantee jack shit about fitment behind ZJ autos, especially early builds. People do it though, so it has to work somehow, but read up on it before tearing a DD'd ZJ apart on my advise, basically.

Some weirdo early ZJs with like a goofy A500se tranny or something (I don't remember, I just know it made my life hell one evening in early 2012) have a strange pilot tip on the output shaft of the trans that slots into a special bushing in the input gear of the tcase. And IIRC some ZJs require a mid-length input gear. I don't know the specifics, even Novak's page is pretty fuzzy on it and when they talked to a New Venture Gear tech about it he said it was frickin retarded and that they were trying to cut down on the variation in input gear types because it was too confusing.

I must have misunderstood you the other night.....my bad....:shhh:

Just got word that Mark Smith, founder of Jeep jamboree passed away. RIP sir.

Thoughts?

The "miss" I'm feeling at idle?

15-20 % across the board is acceptable. Id say thats not it.

I had thought about a bike but I doubt I ever buy one.

Seems like everytime a 7.3 or 6.0 comes throught the shop the bill is $1000+
Last big one I did was Dummy shaft plugs and standpipes Snap to connect fitting and IPR. With all the updates from Ford.

My uncle just got a really nice HD edition CCsb 6.0.
From what Ive seen heads can be done inframe. Pull the HVAC box out of the passengers side and the Booster and MC loose on the drivers. Studs can be installed inframe but you have to put the head on and then stick the stud in. You wont be able to pull the heads again in frame without pulling the studs back out. Thats my understanding of it at least.

Well. I've been avoiding it but I finally looked under my rear seat.... its getting pretty bad.
I need ideas on how to fix it or I will start looking for another jeep.
There's a waggy in Sheffield and this 2 door 1/4 mi away.
