It's a doorless cut up XJ on tons. It's going to end up on 40's at some point. I wouldn't waste my time even if it did see a quick trip to a trail head or a ride to the grocery store.
I'll be on 40's and on tons by the crawl.
I don't know.... I wish I had assist rather than full hydro. Yes it is more work up front, but it is nice to know that you have manual steering if things go bad. Thus far I have killed the motor due to cooling system issues and fuel issues and multiple steering pumps at different points. Because I lost hydro power I could no longer steer even with someone pulling the jeep on a strap. So I had to fix it where it sat rather than drag it back to camp where the fixes would have been easier.
If you have full hydro there is no mechanical steering. When the motor quits you can't steer. It is illegal to drive it on the road.
Don't a lot of big rigs have full hydro? What about all these new fangled cars that have drive by wire?
there was a kid with a really well built wj on 37 or so inch tires that died a few months ago. it was never determined what the exact cause of it was, but he had to brake hard and swerve for some reason with full hydro steering. there were a lot of guys who believe that the kid would still be alive if he only had hydro assist. i wish i could remember the full details, but my memory is slipping.
it was also determined he was only going 35-45 mph (but the rig was also doorless)

The new cars have electric power steering pumps. Even when the wife's engine was turned off, you could turn the wheels. When the power steering pump broke under warranty, you could still manually turn the rack and pinion.
