Important

It's a doorless cut up XJ on tons. It's going to end up on 40's at some point. I wouldn't waste my time even if it did see a quick trip to a trail head or a ride to the grocery store.

I don't know.... I wish I had assist rather than full hydro. Yes it is more work up front, but it is nice to know that you have manual steering if things go bad. Thus far I have killed the motor due to cooling system issues and fuel issues and multiple steering pumps at different points. Because I lost hydro power I could no longer steer even with someone pulling the jeep on a strap. So I had to fix it where it sat rather than drag it back to camp where the fixes would have been easier.

I'll be on 40's and on tons by the crawl.

I'm looking forward to seeing that.

I could still steer without the engine running.

there was a kid with a really well built wj on 37 or so inch tires that died a few months ago. it was never determined what the exact cause of it was, but he had to brake hard and swerve for some reason with full hydro steering. there were a lot of guys who believe that the kid would still be alive if he only had hydro assist. i wish i could remember the full details, but my memory is slipping.

it was also determined he was only going 35-45 mph (but the rig was also doorless)

also...today was a very long but productive day. sold the 44 and all its related parts, went on a road trip and picked up a new pair of axles. then went to the shop and started organizing and packing everything up for the move.

the axles need a little more work than what i expected...the 8.8 was on an mj, so i'm going to have to move the perches, but thats no biggie. the 30 has the sway bar brackets cut off, so i'm going to have to weld them on. it also needs a pinion seal. locker and gears seem great though. the locker engages and disengages as it should.

You guys hitting all the deer, if you keep it, I like the snack sticks...

If I'm driving my rig less than 1 or 2k miles a year on the street I would do full hydro. It's definitely doable, but not the funnest. It's awesome if the rig is primary off road tho. You can steer them even when dead. We pulled Rosco's TJ off of the mountain in Colorado when it wouldn't run on Vail pass and we were able to steer it down. I had the entire matched kit from PSC when I did mine, it was expensive, but steering and being set up correctly was important to me. Plus I didn't have a g/f or wife when I bought it.

If you have full hydro there is no mechanical steering. When the motor quits you can't steer. It is illegal to drive it on the road.

Don't a lot of big rigs have full hydro? What about all these new fangled cars that have drive by wire?

The new cars have electric power steering pumps. Even when the wife's engine was turned off, you could turn the wheels. When the power steering pump broke under warranty, you could still manually turn the rack and pinion.

I remember that thread. I think in the end it was believed the track bar broke.

Not true, other than the illegal part.

When your motor quits, it's like p/s quitting. You can still turn.

Very squirrely. You are always turning the wheel.

the full steer by wire cars have an emergency manual steering column.

if there's a problem in the steer by wire BS then the collar clamps on the mechanical column.

inifinit just recalled theirs.

I think steer by wire is a terrible idea. I like the idea that I'm physically connected to the wheels without the intervention of a computer.

steering and brakes should always be mechanical with power assist in my opinion.
