Important

4.10s and 33s works well, puts you back in the stock range...but tires are bigger and the jeep is generally weighing more. I did that combo twice.

This last build I did 4.56/33s and I should've done it the first two times. Power and pep on tap!

4.56's will come soon enough......with an ARB in the front. My setup works great in Southern Indiana and the hills of KY. It didn't like actual mountains and 10,000+ ft. Elevation. The extra weight of the cage is what has me wanting 4.56's.

On the gearing topic when I looked I came up with 4.10 being a small touch higher than stock and 4.56 a perfect amount lower than stock for a well balanced rig on 33's.

I ran 31's for a few years with my 4.56 and boy it could jump out into busy traffic and could still get up to highway speed at higher rpm of course.
But it also ate gas and slowed down quickly when you let off .

I hadn't used 4low in years it was so low but in Moab It sucked, in 4low I couldn't keep up pulling the trailer on Lockheart basin and 4high came up short during a few climbs. (with trailer)

Haven't been off road or on the highway yet but 33's and 4.56 make for a much nicer ride around town. I have noticed I will be using a lot more braking and I feel some of that oomph gone from accelerating uphill. I imagine my cowl intake will be a bit quieter on the highway at least since rpms shouldn't be quite so high so often.

I was doing a little research on the Spare'okee and it might have stock 4.56 gears because it is a 2.5L auto?

I would snag that 4.10 axle and either resell or do the 8.8 swap with it knowing you will likely want to go lower and sell them later.

Well got thinking about it some more and since our rig is a daily driver right now we aren't getting to crazy with it so I think 4.10's will be ok for a while till my money tree starts growing again. Darn tree heard wedding bells and shed all its leaves. Plus we are getting the axle for free now so I really can't pass it up.

Later down the road it will be a trail rig and will be getting bigger axles then so will go with something a little lower at that point of the build.

Free? Shit, I would have already called out sick from work to get it for that price.

Oh... protip, if you are going with an open/autolocker d30 and 3.73 or deeper gearing, grab the carrier out of a ZJ with a V8 at the boneyard and save some cash instead of spending 50+ on a 3.73-up carrier online. IIRC all V8 ZJs are 3.73 gearing.

I bought one from Tractor Supply to mount up a couple 31s. It was a workout. Also is it well known that you can't use those things on aluminum wheels, or was I just being careless? I left some pretty substantial gouges in the lip of the rim. They held air though!

Guess I didn't know that well known fact then... I did a couple sets of of aluminum rims with mine. I'm fat and old.. so I go slow and I didn't gouge the rims up. Concentrated dish soap makes a pretty darn good lube.

auto parts warehouse has them as well at that price...i ordered one from JC whitney and one from there...some people reported that jc whitney ones were out of stock, but ones from autoparts warehouse were actually assigned tracking numbers. crossing my fingers that at least one comes through. if not, im not out anything. if they both come through i will sell one at double the price (still about 35% off retail) and have one for free :)

Build a rock bouncer
school funded ultra 4 buggy?

apparently UofM brought a 4wd car once just to tackle a rock course that was set up. it did very well, but was slow as piss (drivetrain loss) in the 4 hour endurance event. our car is spooled for the snow at MTU. but id really be curious to see cutting brakes on the new car with an open rear end.

Have you used the ax15-3.55 combo with 33's? I am still running the 3.07 and keep debating finding a pair of 3.55 axles for a little more pep..
done it. was pretty good. better than 3.07s, thats for sure. speedo was dead nuts on. still had to pass and go uphill on the highway in 4th, but it worked. after driving a buddys rig (on and offroad) with 4.88s, i need them. deeper would be even better for wheeling the manual.
