Important

I have moved mine three times.
It weighs over 300 pounds.
When I bought it, I used slave labor, my kids and their friends, all H.S. football players.
The second time I hired movers.
The third time I used a bobcat.
It will stay here now until I die or it falls through the floor in a house fire.

Broom handles or wooden dowels work well for moving them around on hard surfaces.

Re: Re: Important

For those of you with gun safes how did you get them into your house?

I have seen many people leave them in the garage. When you go big enough and properly secure, along with the right humidity levels...you don't need to worry about the zombies and burglars.

Because people don't do what it takes to get them to the basement, the garage is the next best place. Ground floor is dangerous because that beast will be in the basement after a house fire along with the thousands of gallons of water the fire department just finished pumping.

Mine went down the stairs not up. Figured if someone really wanted it, they would have a hell of a time getting it back up. I also feel better anchoring it to concrete than these crap floors.

I dread the day I move.

But it took a hand cart and two guys. Was about 300 lbs and they're kind of awkward.

I am thinking basement, will def be a waterproof safe after thinking about the 1000s of gallons comment.
No room in garage

Glad I could help you think. You may be able to set it on a base of some kind. Then you only have to worry about deep water and not paying for something to be waterproof. Any fire fighters on here that could tell us how much standing water is usually in a basement after a house fire?

Also with fire in mind. If you can put it in a corner of a basement you can reduce the amount of sides exposed to heat. Two sides facing concrete helps insulate along with reducing it's ability to tip over when floor joists break.

My comments on the garage are referencing my three friends with gun store sized safes, the kind of things you take the door frame out...

Sales pitch to the wife when you try to buy the largest safe they have for sale. This isn't about protecting the guns as much as family things:
Backup drives
Tax info
Account info
Memory sticks
Video cards
Cash that everyone should have just in case we have a short term electrical issue (ice storm)
jewelry while on vacation
Etc....

I was a FF for 15 years, it was a rural district with no hydrants. The question you asked can not be answered definitively. There are too many factors at play.
If you are in a rural area with out fire hydrants, there will be a lot less water used, but if you live in an area that has hydrants they do not conserve water and may pour 100,000 gallons on it. That is why you seldom see a tower truck in rural area, they can not feed it, but in the city they may put two towers on a fire and dump 1500 gallons per min, or more, each. If you have a walk out basement the water will not get very deep regardless of how much water they pour on it.
Honestly, if your house burns and it is a total loss, your guns, hopefully, will be very low on your "Important" list.

My gun safe is in a closet in the office. I put it in here before the door frames were installed. There is no way to get it out of this room with out a saw and five people. I keep vehicle titles, cash, important documents, and heirlooms in my safe.

My buddy built a cinder block room in his basement to keep his arsenal safe.
We carried over 200 blocks down the stairs, he installed a steel fire door and put in a reinforced fire proof ceiling in it. It is about 5' x 10'.

I am thinking about picking up some duck dynasty stuff and wearing it to christmas w the inlaws tomorrow, her brother is an outspoken non believer......Pretty sure if I do this AND let them know I carry they will not invite me back......

Make sure you get duck commander brand (the family gets those profits) and not duck dynasty brand (A&E owns that name).

I don't have a safe. Think I'm taking all of my guns to Iowa with me when I go back, might get one to put in the barn or something.
Maybe talk Jed into a gun/reloading room.

My sales pitch to wife, " I am getting a safe"
her "OK"
Wife: what's that?
Sales pitch: a safe.

You guys must do something wrong.

My sales pitch went like this.
Wife, "Now that we live here do we need to have guns and ammo boxes in every closet in the house?"
Me, "Where do you want me to put them, there is no more room in my gun safe."
Wife "Lets go get the biggest one we can find so I can keep my guns in a safe also. I will pay for it"

My wife is the best!
