Important

I didn't think for the 8.25 you had to get a retaining plate. Thought that was just for the XJ Dana 44.

You are right. 8.25 is C clip... at least in the XJ/AN/BN/DN. It is full float in the XK but who cares about those.

Harbor Freight has the 300 piece tool set on sale for $150 today:

I bought the same set 6 years ago to kickstart my toolbox when I first got into turning wrenches. I cut apart the trays and put each one in a tool box drawer. The ratchets finally gave out this year but otherwise it's been a great set of tools.

After bending a couple of thier wrenches I don't trust thier stuff for much more than trail spares and even then I don't carry much of thier stuff.

Their stuff has a life time warranty like everything else tho.

I have pretty much all Craftsman also but for a one time use type of "special" tool they have some stuff that will get you out of a jam cheap.

I've done ok with harbor freight stuff. I don't use it much, but in a pinch if I need it, I have a few things. Mostly from 'freebies' that they are giving away all the time with a purchase, i have half a dozen tape measures and more screw drivers than I can count.

I have bought a few specific things from there or autozone, like the ratchet and socket for the trailer bearings that I leave in the trailer, and that's the only place it is used.

I've got a ton of separate tool bags these days, at one point, I had one for each of two trailers, each of two trail jeeps, and the tow rig.

All fair points. I bought it primarily for a decent set of 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 sockets. Most cheap tool sets include very few wrenches because there is so much metal in them. I bought a metric wrench set separately that didn't skip any sizes.

I bought it and assumed I'd be replacing it with nicer stuff down the road, but the sockets have held up well and I am pretty hard on them. It was nice when I started working on stuff to have a fairly complete set and everything had a home, rather than digging through sockets in a small toolbox.

Full float or semi float?

all 8.25s I know of except the XK one are semi float, c clip. The one exception is the XK 8.25, it's a wonky full float design with some sort of weird unit bearing at each wheel (iirc) that slips over splines on the outer end of the axleshaft.

They actually had to recall their fuses a while ago because they weren't blowing, and it set some cars on fire.

I wouldn't trust their hose clamps either.

On the other hand I have their 3/4" breaker bar, thing kicks ass. I am upgrading to 3/4 drive on everything I have previously broken 1/2 drive tools on... axle nut socket, pinion nut sockets, etc. Just picked up their 21 piece 3/4 drive SAE socket set for $60 on sale... so now I have two 3/4 ratchets, two 3/4 breaker bars, (had one of each already), extensions, and a pile of sockets.

I leaned on a rusty seized d60 pinion nut with 4 foot of iron pipe and the 3/4 HF breaker bar and it came off like butter.

I'm not sure how you can mess up a hose clamp. The fuses are in my "trail spares" bag so they only get me off the trail. And they didn't have a problem blowing when my NSS caused me to blow my PCM fuse every time I went in R so I think they're good.

I have ran into a few hose clamps that strip out as soon as you snug them down.

I usually stock up on fuses and relays when I hit the junkyard.

The only tools from HF I've had luck with is a set of their deep impact sockets and for some odd reason a 4" angle grinder that just won't die. Everything else has failed in short order.
