You do in Michigan

I always say it was $300, bought it with a bad motor. I've never been questioned.

Bringing burgers to Big Rapids today.

Keeping chedda supplied with greasey food.

Do you head south after that? If you know in advance you are doing this again and can get a lunch break sometime let me know, I may be able to convince the boss man to let me sneak out for an hour.

I pay sales tax on 400 dollars on every vehicle I buy, the lowest I can put on a title without any questions is 4 bills. Costs me 90$ to register anything tn. IIRC in Georgia it's a pretty similar regulatory climate. I haven't paid sales tax on any straight trades but again that's in tn.

So, my pinion seal on the front is leaking and there is a tiny bit of play in the bearings. Is it a straight forward job to swap the bearings out?

No not really

Damn. I was hoping I could pull the carrier and swap in bearings and keep the right amount of shims where they were and reassemble.

In that case my trailer is worth what the RV is worth and the truck was thrown in for free...

I'd use the same brand bearing you have info there now then you have to set preload again, right chetta?

Yes preload will have to be set again. And yes using the exact same bearing you'll have better luck.

In all reality it's not going to change too much bearing to bearing, but setting preload, pulling bearings, blah blah is a big project to tackle if you've never done one before.

Are you low pinion?

Agreed. In theory it is a simple mechanical swap type job with setting up not being rocket science, but it is not something you want to do ill equipped or a driveway job in the cold. I used to be intimidated by gears, now I view them as a doable pain in the ass and I would rather drink beer and jack it.

When I did mine, I found there were no preload shims (odd, but beer_goggles had a legit gear shop do them, so good enough for me) and I reused the original pinion depth shims. It was still a decent amount of work to do it all.

I torqued down the pinion nut, checked rotational torque and it measured the same as before. All I did for backlash was feel it before I took the carrier out and after I put it back in to make sure it wasn't way off. Everything has been fine and it doesn't make a bit of noise. I wouldn't hesitate to do it that way again (even if it's technically wrong).

Unless it bites me in the ass, then I'll be on here complaining about it.

Ever called the BMV before?

I walked in to ask a specific question about trailer towing and licensing after a cop told me something different than I understood. The ladies there pulled out a big code book and showed me the exact citation that the cop was misquoting. The supervisor made me a copy of it and stapled her card to it for me. I said I wanted to be sure that a state DOT cop wouldn't nail me. The supervisor said to met that the DOT cops wouldn't bother me, as they actually knew what they were doing.
