Important

But my stock durango box is 3 turns lock to lock and not 3.5 like an XJ box ;)

I might be wrong but I think that's just the gearing inside the box and doesn't effect the throw of the arm, right? You should still have full lock to lock with just less turns on the wheel.

I can't see much at work, but it looks like the durango box has a 12.7:1 ratio and a XJ box has a 14:1 ratio. That would probably affect the amount of travel in the output portion of the box versus the amount of steering wheel input, but I don't have the G2 to figure that math out.

What I do know is that a lot of folks have complained about the 3 turns on a durango box after installation, particularly on a high steer setup that moves the arms further away from center, and how it limits the amount of steering at the wheel. The fix is to remove the spacer and grind the cap to allow that last .5 turn.

Now I have a couple of issues with mine, which results in less than stellar steering angle. It's a combination of the length of the pitman arm, the single shear draglink/tierod one hole steering arm setup and the unmodified durango box.

So since I'm not crazy about my draglink angle, I can get the tires turned more by putting on one of these FSJ drop arms and get them turned all the way using different high steer arms that have 2 holes to move the draglink hole back closer to the center. That should get me where I need to be without taking my steering box out and modifying it because I'm lazy. Right now I'm nowhere close to the steering stops.

Ok know this will sound like i'm a newb but what are the benefits of swapping out the gear box for a different one?

Durango box has a slightly larger cylinder bore. The 'gear ratio' is different so that turning can be 'easier' if you get the box with the right ratio. It also retains the stock 3-bolt mounting system although you need to build a custom spacer or use washers between the spacer and the box. That's about all I know about it and most of that is through 'tribal knowledge'...

The 4 bolt is fine, you just bolt it on and ignore the extra bolt unless you want to mod it to support that one too. Same goes for J truck boxes, they're 4 bolt too.

I run a Durango box and am reasonably happy with it.

My after-school club held a 'Smash N' Bash' fundraiser today. They had virtually $0 into it and came out at $160 so all were pleased. It was $1/hit or $5/6 hits with a maul, hand maul, cheater bar, or crow-bar...

It ended pretty well for the Pontiac Bonneville

Disney would be one hell of a drive, we are thinking about going but we would fly

About 24 hours from mi we did it a few times when I was a kid

I'm sure Stephen would let you leave it at the campground.

I'll keep it in mind.

Well if my plan works out i will be getting a cabin for about 9or 10 days. you are more than welcome to leave it with me.

FL would be a long ass detour tho.

Kool thanks for the offer Sam.

Had a buddy at the sheetmetal shop who contracts at my plant make a license plate bracket for the jeep to mount my light to. He used some pretty thick stainless. I believe it oughta hold up!

Changed the water pump and thermostat on the XJ tonight. Went back together fine, but the t'stat housing is leaking like a sieve. :banghead:

I *almost* bought 2 gaskets when I got parts, but thought I could get it done in one shot. Figures. Guess I'll re-do it tomorrow.

When I did mine (yes I actually did that on my own), one did fine, did I get lucky?

Either the t'stat slipped a bit when I put the housing on or the spray gasket sealant I used this time since i couldn't find RTV, didn't seal.

It's an easy fix, as long as the WP doesn't start leaking too I'll be happy.

Morning!

Shop cleaning day at school, want to make a scrap run, but don't know if I should cut up and scrap the CJ5 old frame yet or wait till the 5 starts going back together? Tired of looking at it (the frame) but have a nagging feeling I might need it yet...

Suffering through a head/chest cold that I caught last weekend from my father. He's on cough medicine w/codeine now so I can only assume I'm not even to the half-way point...
