Important

Head gaskets, timing belt.

If it's a 2.5L, rod bearings.

99 Subaru Legacy. What do I have to look for on these cars?

personally i like the later models...but...compression, oil in coolant or oil on the ceramic on the spark plugs are signs of head gasket issues. timing belts are also something that needs to be changed fairly regularly. the non boosted models have less issues than the turbos as far as head gasket burn. the trannys and awd seem to last forever if you do regular fluid changes. there are plenty of 99 legacys with high miles that are still out there though. they are good cars, but because of the boxer engines it makes things like head gasket changes a slight pita

At least it's a single cam engine, Ryan......dohc motors are a nightmare.

Yup. **** the EJ25DAX.

That being said, you can swap an EJ22 in to replace them reasonably easily from what I hear. It'll be down a bit on power but the EJ22 is reliable enough that people actually put them in homebuilt airplanes.

Other than the head gaskets which took a dump a month after we bought it, the car has been pretty reliable. I just don't like the car. It's horribly under powered, it's uncomfortable. It's a hippy car. Gas mileage sucks and its hard on tires.

All my friends with Subarus are trying to get me to buy one of those damn things because I said I wanted good gas mileage.

Me: what are you getting?
Them: like 25, 26mpg!
Me: I get 22mpg commuting in my freakin' 15 year old jeep. I think it'd take like a decade to break even.
Them: but, but, but...

I had a 95 legacy with a 2.2l 5 speed that had 240k miles that was great until it rusted out from Vermont winters.

Edit: I got 29mpg highway

Chevy Ventures get 30mpg... :D

Just sayin.

My buddy gets 30 on the highway in his 300whp 09 WRX.....another gets 16 in his highly modified STi running on E85! :D

I hate oil pans, I hate rear main seals...

Good news is that as long as I did it correctly, I'm out of that game for a minute...

Exhaust and a front axle to install...but since I'm working or sleeping the next four days straight nothing will get done until Friday night...

My dad picked up a stainless magnaflow for the cherokee I gave him. It was louder on the 2.5l. He complained so I bought a quieter stainless muffler for him and threw the magnaflow on my jeep. Its a lot quieter then the rusted out factory one that was on it. I realized that I need to add some bpe or redo my rear shock mounts and should start looking for a new leaf pack. My factory ones with the aal look like death..

No subi in my future. Just bought a motor for the red jeep.

and you already know how to work on the XJ platform

Anyone know where to find info about the giveaway XJ...Would be nice to have a hot link.....

LOL ....Just Kidding nice work MAC.....

our 2005 legacy gt got about 26 on the highway normally...got 30 ONCE. usually with me driving the mileage was worse, but i liked the turbo :) ours had 140k on it when we sold it but it still had good compression and ran like a top other than the turbo that was out lol. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another subaru... i would have traded him. then sold the subi and bought a nicer jeep. subaru's have the second highest resale of any car in america behind honda. a 99 in good shape is worth 2-4k depending on mileage and options. ive seen some turbo subies sell for over kbb value
