Ok need some help from all of you. Was just asked to try and help find a motor for someone. They have an 04 jeep grand cherokee with the 4.0 and it sounds like they ran it into a lake or thats atleast what i was told. Is there a certain year engine that has to go into this jeep or would just any 4.0 block work? Im doubting that the 4.0 i have sitting at home would work for them cause it came out of an 89 xj. Any advise would be great.

I think the WJ has a different motor mount than the zj, XJ, tj... So if that's right you'd have to use a WJ motor.

There are a couple of "what fits" threads in OEM or Mod tech currently, but short version, I believe it needs to be a 00+ TJ or 99+ WJ block due to the accessory and engine mounts.

I have seen somewhere around here, a WJ/TJ motor installed in an XJ, but it was probably more work than anyone but an XJ enthusiast would bother with. Probably similar complications putting an XJ motor in a WJ...
