Yeah but the payment downgrade is always welcome....

My cushy burb costs less than my electric bill every month :D

Your experience is part of what got me thinking about doing this. My longest trip (Harlan) is 700 miles round trip. 700 miles at 8 mpg = 87.5 gallons. At $4/gal that's $350 in fuel, but I won't have a $400/mo payment. When I have to fill it up my chest hurts a little bit but on paper I know I'm saving money.

Specs on the Dmax?

Short version, I will make a f/s thread today. 2004.5 LLY Duramax, 5-speed Allison, 4x4. 171k on it. SLT trim, leather, power everything. It would haul two trailers no problem :)

I like towing with the burb. And when I'm by myself it's perfect to sleep in. Btw I got 10mpg towing in Indiana, doing 65. Going to Harlan I got around 8. Big hills = big rpms

what are you getting next?

Looking at stuff that's a bit newer...reliable and lower miles...

Max at 33s.

I loved towing with my Burb. 12ish MPG towing my ZJ with the 6.5L and a place to sleep. I couldn't justify spending $4-5 a gallon on diesel for a DD, and I missed having a pickup bed so it got replaced.

Everyone makes this statement, but I don't understand it.

On the way to work this morning, gas $3.39 a gallon and diesel $3.99 a gallon.

My truck has a 29 gallon tank. I put 26 gallons in it every two weeks (400 miles or so) if I'm driving it everyday to work.

26 x 3.39 is $88.14 and 26 x $3.99 is $103.74. I spend $15.60 more to fill up with diesel. If I fill it up every two weeks for a year (stay with me here), then that's 26 x $15.60 = $405.60 a year more for diesel.

Now, that only works if I'm getting the same mileage. I average 15.5 mpg daily in my diesel. If I get 2 mpg less than that, I pay the same for gas even though gas is cheaper. 26 x 13.5 mpg is 351 miles. That's 87% of the miles I get with 26 gallons of diesel at $103.74. A fill up of gas compared to diesel is 84% of the cost of a diesel fill up.

At the end of the day, there's nothing more expensive about putting fuel in a diesel. The maintenance and the initial cost of the vehicle is what gets you. But if you're strictly comparing the price per gallon, it's a wash. You're not getting the same mileage out of your gas 3/4 or 1 ton truck that you are out of a diesel.

I know my math isn't exact, but you get the point.

Tried to demo replacing shocks on the rear of a Widstar today... Upper bolt on the drivers side is seized to the bushing insert. Tried everything and eventually cut the shock of the bushing collar, but can't get any room to get up in there and cut it out... Frustrated as this was supposed to be a 15min demo.

if i dd'ed my truck it would be diesel, i have enough know how to keep a diesel reliable and with some days adding up to a total of 50 miles it would be worth it. but as of right now she drives it 4 miles to work and back and it costs me half as much as a comparable condition diesel truck to own. its mainly a back up vehicle for us as she wants to dd her jeep. Im about to have 4 running vehicles in the next month so the big gas burb can sit :D

besides its just money....im about to just start driving what i want and screw economy

yes it is, I couldn't get to 4th, pulled that bastard in 3rd on the governor doing 35. No overheating though.

the ford EDIS uses a 36-1 tooth wheel on thebanacer to trigger timing.
it's stupid simple to replace, they're on the front of the motor and external, not like a 4.0 CPS buried in the bellhousing.

a train leaving Detroit loaded with gas powered pick up trucks is headed towards Florida, how much diesel does it require to generate electricity needed to transport them to Minneapolis?

I never overheated...things just got warm...it never got above 224 so the fan didn't even kick on. Of course if I didn't try to pull 70 up those hills it would run cooler also...

Not a lot, frickin' diesel electric trains get like 500 mpg.

I dunno...my buddy works for the rail road and told me what those motors burn in diesel...

I only have a diesel because of the trailer I tow. If I was just towing a single place car trailer I'd be pimping an eccoboost F150...

maybe......

speaking of big hills, is 70 the best way out west? i know you've taken the different routes. it looks like eisenhower IS the lowest point at which to cross. Even though it's 11K feet.

Looking for the least amount of elevation, because my no turbo'd ass is going to hate life above 7K feet.

For Moab and Colorado I've always taken I70...

With 2 jeeps on a trailer I'm ok...with 3 I'm a bit concerned...

probably better than we're going to do with one on the bed and another in tow.

I'm thinking we'll weigh in somewhere around 22K with people/gear and jeeps.

It's going to be asking a lot of my poor N/A IDI.
At least it's got a massive cooling system.
well, tats a plus for the trip, a downside for my maintenance costs. Going to be $150 in freaking coolant to change it.
